Assistant Professor Rhetoric and Composition
Entry-level Assistant Professor position in Rhetoric and Composition with an emphasis on composition instruction, student success, and applied/professional writing. Responsibilities include teaching first-year composition, advanced writing, technical/professional writing, and multimodal communication across undergraduate and graduate curricula (including face-to-face, online, evening, and/or weekend formats); advising students; maintaining an active research and/or creative agenda; contributing to curriculum development; and participating in departmental, college, and university service. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching writing in access-oriented environments, supporting students transitioning into college-level writing, and preparing students for writing in academic, professional, and digital contexts.
Teach first-year composition, advanced writing, technical/professional writing, and multimodal communication courses Support student success in gateway and developmental writing courses, including co-requisite and TSI-related instruction Develop and support curriculum aligned with digital literacy, ethical AI use, and workforce readiness Contribute to courses such as Writing in the Disciplines and Technical Editing Design and implement scaffolded writing instruction that supports students across varying levels of preparedness Integrate real-world and workplace writing practices into course design and instruction Maintain an active research and/or creative agenda in rhetoric, composition, or applied/digital writing Advise undergraduate and graduate students Serve on departmental, college, and university committees Participating in professional activities including conferences, workshops, and seminars Integrate digital tools and emerging technologies into writing instruction Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Education - Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or English. Master's degree in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or a writing-intensive field preferred.
Required Licensing/Certification - Preferred evidence of engagement with emerging instructional technologies (e.g., AI credentialing, digital pedagogy certifications, or equivalent experience)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Knowledge of: Composition pedagogy with an emphasis on student development and writing proficiency Developmental writing and co-requisite instructional models Writing across academic, professional, and digital contexts Emerging technologies in writing instruction, including artificial intelligence Skill in: Effective teaching and instructional design across multiple modalities Strong written and verbal communication Organization, time management, and problem-solving Application of active learning strategies (e.g., Multiple Response Strategies) in writing classrooms Classroom management in diverse and high need learning environments Ability to: Support students transitioning from high school to college-level writing Design scaffolded instruction that improves student writing outcomes Integrate real-world and professional writing practices into coursework Engage and support a diverse student population Implement accommodation and inclusive teaching practices effectively Contribute to departmental growth through teaching, curriculum development, and applied scholarship. Work Experience - Preferred: Experience teaching diverse student populations across secondary and/or postsecondary contexts Experience teaching high school or dual-enrollment students, particularly in writing, English, or composition courses Demonstrated ability to support students who are TSI-liable or in developmental writing contexts Experience scaffolding writing instruction for students transitioning from high school to college-level expectations Demonstrated integration of digital tools, multimodal composition, or artificial intelligence in writing instruction Experience teaching technical and/or professional writing courses, including writing for workplace, digital, or interdisciplinary contexts Experience with curriculum development in applied, professional, or technical writing. Preferred evidence of engagement with emerging instructional technologies (e.g., AI credentialing, digital pedagogy certifications, or equivalent experience) Ability to maintain the security or integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment or water treatment system.
