JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Penn State Berks Composition Program is seeking qualified part-time instructors for our first-year writing courses. We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated individuals who shares our commitment to undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate will contribute to our efforts to create a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for students.
The primary responsibilities of the Adjunct English Composition Instructor include:
  • Plan and teach one to three in-person course sections (three to nine credits) per semester
  • Follow best practices for teaching English Composition (see WPA Resolutions and Statements, among others)
  • Work effectively with diverse populations and audiences
  • Hold at least one office hour per three credits taught
  • Grade student work (with limited assistance from artificial intelligence)
  • Submit student progress evaluations at least twice during the semester
  • Respond to administration and student emails
  • Participate in professional development activities
  • Effectively use the Penn State learning management system (Canvas)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Completion of all requirements for the M.A. in Rhetoric/Composition, English, or a closely related field with degree awarded by the start date of employment
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to undergraduate education in writing studies, rhetoric, and composition, as well as experience teaching students with a variety of needs and experiences
  • Evidence of commitment to supporting diversity, inclusion, equity, and accessibility in higher education

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D in Rhetoric/Composition or closely related field
  • Experience teaching advanced writing and/or writing in the disciplines, particularly technical writing
  • Experience teaching multimodal composition and integrating various educational technologies
  • Interest and experience in community-based writing
