About the Department:

Mason's English Department is home to a diverse and collegial faculty committed to teaching excellence, innovation, community and public service, and student success. The Composition Program is actively engaged in the development of curricular and pedagogical approaches that support Mason's different student populations and hopes to engage new faculty in this work. Its courses are part of a vertical writing curriculum that includes general education writing requirements at the introductory and upper levels taught by the faculty in the Composition Program, Writing Intensive courses in the major, and synthesis and capstone courses across the university. About the Position:

The George Mason University English Department invites applications for Composition Adjunct Faculty to teach first-year writing and/or advanced composition. This position is a one-semester appointment with the possibility for renewal beginning Fall 2026.

Responsibilities:

  • The department particularly needs faculty who can teach first-year composition, including composition for multilingual students and international pathways students (ENGH 100, 101, and 123), and advanced composition (ENGH 302);
  • Note that candidates must be able to attend professional development workshops held the week of August 10 at the Fairfax campus in Virginia;
  • Minimum pay per course is $4000. Adjunct faculty can teach up to three sections per semester based on course availability and instructor preferences; and
  • This position requires presence on the Fairfax Campus; it cannot be carried out remotely.

Required Qualifications:

  • MA in Rhetoric and Composition, English, TESOL, or MFA in Creative Writing in hand; and
  • At least one years' experience teaching college-level general education composition courses within the past three years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in rhetoric and composition (or related area); and
  • Experience with second language pedagogies or teaching multilingual or international students.
