What is an RF manager?

An RF (Radio Frequency) Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the planning, deployment, optimization, and maintenance of radio frequency networks, such as those used in telecommunications, broadcasting, or wireless communications. They manage teams of engineers and technicians, ensure regulatory compliance, and work to maximize network performance and coverage. RF Managers also analyze data, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate with other departments to support network expansion and upgrades.

What are some common challenges RF managers face when coordinating cross-functional teams?

RF Managers often work closely with engineering, operations, and project management teams to ensure optimal network performance. A common challenge is aligning technical requirements and timelines across departments, as each group may have different priorities. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are essential to manage expectations, resolve conflicts, and drive projects forward. Additionally, RF Managers must stay updated on evolving technologies and regulatory standards, which requires continuous learning and adaptability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RF manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RF Manager, you need in-depth knowledge of radio frequency engineering, wireless communication principles, and a relevant degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with RF design tools (such as Atoll or TEMS), spectrum analyzers, and industry certifications like CWNA or CCNA Wireless is often required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are vital for managing teams and projects effectively. These abilities ensure optimal network performance, efficient project execution, and the ability to adapt to evolving wireless technology demands.

What is the difference between Rf Manager vs Rf Engineer?

AspectRf ManagerRf Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; often requires leadership experienceBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering or RF Engineering
Work EnvironmentOversees RF projects, manages teams, coordinates with other departmentsDesigns, tests, and implements RF systems and components
Industry UsageUsed in telecommunications, broadcasting, and wireless industries for leadership rolesHands-on technical roles in RF design and development

The Rf Manager focuses on overseeing RF projects and managing teams, requiring leadership skills and strategic planning. In contrast, the Rf Engineer is primarily involved in technical design, testing, and implementation of RF systems. Both roles require strong technical knowledge, but their responsibilities and focus differ significantly.

Senior RF Engineer

Icarus

Los Angeles, CA

$120K - $220K/yr

Full-time

Re-posted 23 days ago

Job description

Icarus was founded on the belief that the Stratosphere is the Forgotten Frontier and that reclaiming it will define the next era of aerospace and what is possible from the sky. We build solar-powered aircraft that fly at 60,000 ft for weeks at a time, delivering persistent, affordable, and scalable presence from this layer of the atmosphere.

Mission

Re-establish and maintain dominance in the Stratosphere.

What you'll do
  • Design, build, and fly RF and communications systems for long-endurance stratospheric aircraft
  • Own RF subsystems end to end: architecture, link budgets, component selection, integration, test, and flight validation
  • Design and integrate radios, antennas, RF front ends, and data links for LOS and BLOS operation
  • Drive RF performance through analysis, simulation, bench testing, and flight data
  • Lead EMI/EMC mitigation across avionics, power, and payload systems
  • Work closely with avionics, GNC, electrical, mechanical, and software teams to deliver robust flight communications
  • Support integration, production bring-up, and flight operations in the desert
What we're looking for
  • 2+ years designing and deploying real RF systems for aerospace, defense, UAVs, or similarly demanding environments
  • Strong fundamentals in RF theory, electromagnetics, and communications systems
  • Experience with link budgets, antenna design or selection, RF propagation, and system-level trade studies
  • Hands-on experience with RF test equipment (spectrum analyzers, VNAs, signal generators, power meters)
  • Experience debugging RF systems in the field, not just in simulation
  • Comfort working from first principles and validating performance through test and flight data
  • Ability to move fast, own outcomes, and operate with minimal supervision
Why Icarus
  1. Meaningful equity
  2. Top market salary and bonuses
  3. Health, dental, and vision insurance
  4. Factory in El Segundo
  5. Real ownership, real hardware, real flight
  6. Small team, massive responsibility
  7. High signal (engineering) to noise (management) culture
  8. Dream desk setup
  9. Daily lunch
  10. Unlimited celsius
This is not a normal engineering job
  1. We are pioneers, not corporate managers. Icarus deliberately optimizes for a high signal (engineers) to noise (management) ratio, where engineering, flight, and execution matter more than process, politics, or management overhead
  2. You will work side by side with the CEO and a small team of world-class builders. You will own your subsystem end to end. Design it. Build it. Break it. Fix it. Validate it in the desert. Fly it. Then do it again, faster
  3. We expect full extreme ownership. This is a high-trust, no-BS team, and everyone pulls their weight
  4. We are hiring across the stack: mechanical, aerodynamics, RF, GNC, electrical, avionics, power electronics, energy storage, software, and systems
  5. We want builders. No hand-holding. No fluff. No fake projects. No slide decks. No sitting in meetings all day. Just raw engineering, real hardware, and real flight
  6. You must thrive under pressure, learn fast, troubleshoot in the field, and push hardware to its limits. We move fast. We go to Mojave at 4 am in the morning. We expect results and an obsession with quality and speed
  7. You will be a core executor of flight systems, taking them from concept to reality and driving rapid iteration loops. You will work across design, integration, testing, and flight. If you want real ownership, real hardware, and real flight milestones, this is it.

No tourists. No bystanders. Only builders.

Hiring process
  1. Technical interview
  2. One-on-one with CEO
  3. Meet the team in-person
