What is a retail store planner?

Retail Store Planners are professionals responsible for designing and organizing the layout of retail stores to optimize space, enhance customer experience, and maximize sales. They work closely with store managers, merchandisers, and architects to develop floor plans, allocate space for different product categories, and ensure that the store's design aligns with brand standards. Their role often involves analyzing sales data, traffic patterns, and customer behaviors to inform their planning decisions. Retail Store Planners play a critical role in both new store openings and remodels, making sure that the physical environment supports business goals.

How does a retail store planner typically collaborate with merchandising and operations teams to optimize store layouts?

Retail Store Planners work closely with merchandising and operations teams to ensure that store layouts support both product visibility and operational efficiency. This collaboration often involves regular meetings to review sales data, discuss new product launches, and address logistical challenges. By integrating feedback from these teams, planners can adjust floor plans and fixture placements to enhance the customer experience while supporting inventory management and sales goals. Successful planners are proactive communicators who seek input and adjust their designs to align with the broader business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retail store planner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Retail Store Planner, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in space planning, and a background in retail management or merchandising, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with planogram software (such as JDA or AutoCAD), retail analytics tools, and inventory management systems is common. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and optimizing store layouts. These competencies are crucial for maximizing sales, enhancing the customer shopping experience, and ensuring efficient use of retail space.

To become a retail store planner, candidates typically need a bachelor's degree in retail management, interior design, architecture, or a related field. Gaining experience in retail environments, developing skills in space planning and design software like AutoCAD or SketchUp, and understanding retail operations are important steps. Certifications in project management or design can also enhance prospects in this role.

Job description

“I’ve had the joy of building Sézane alongside you - the first French fashion brand born online, rooted in quality, creativity, and intention.

To tell the story of Sézane is to retrace more than 20 years of defining adventures and bold decisions: choosing to do things differently, choosing people, choosing to act, and above all, choosing to trust in one’s convictions - even when that means rethinking what we thought we knew.

Sézane is more than a fashion brand. It’s a story of life - mine, yours, and all those who shape it every day.” Morgane Sézalory, Founder & CEO

To continue to co-construct the next chapter and beyond, we are looking for creative, organized and agile talents, who share our passion to perpetually improve all that can be.

Care to imagine what comes next with us? We can’t wait to hear from you!

  • Coordinate bid process, source/evaluate contractor/millwork proposals, participate in contractor/millworker selection, and support contract negotiations in partnership with Global Procurement lead.
  • Source and manage Architects of Record (AORs), contractors, millworkers, and specialty vendors from documentation through mobilization.
  • Prepare and maintain as-built drawings through project completion.

Construction Coordination & Management

  • Coordinate AORs, contractors, consultants, vendors, landlords, and internal teams throughout construction, resolving field issues and driving projects to successful completion.
  • Oversee day-to-day site operations, quality control, and compliance with approved plans and brand standards.
  • Build and manage project schedules, proactively flagging risks and implementing solutions to protect budget and opening dates.
  • Manage procurement, manufacturing/commissioning, delivery, and installation of all owner-furnished items (materials, FF&E, etc).
  • Lead project meetings, review and coordinate RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, change orders, and payment applications.
  • Manage budgets, review payment applications, and oversee closeout, punch lists, and handover to Retail Operations.
  • Act as on-site project lead through construction and installation, ensuring readiness for merchandising and opening.

Permitting & Regulatory Coordination

  • Manage permits and regulatory approvals (signage, tenant improvements, landlord and municipal submissions).
  • Ensure compliance with building codes, ADA requirements, life safety rules, and landlord criteria.
  • Coordinate specialized approvals with outside consultants when needed.
  • Track permit timelines and liaise directly with landlords, municipalities, and permitting agencies.

Ongoing partnership & Vendor Management

  • Build and maintain strong network of AORs, contractors, fabricators, millworkers, and signage vendors across the US.
  • Identify and onboard market-specific consultants and vendors for future projects.

Cross-Functional Project Management

  • Lead end-to-end project management of delegated retail stores & other offline projects, acting as the key liaison across design, legal, insurance, signage, retail, merchandising, shipping, and operations.
