What is a retail store planner?

Retail Store Planners are professionals responsible for designing and organizing the layout of retail stores to optimize space, enhance customer experience, and maximize sales. They work closely with store managers, merchandisers, and architects to develop floor plans, allocate space for different product categories, and ensure that the store's design aligns with brand standards. Their role often involves analyzing sales data, traffic patterns, and customer behaviors to inform their planning decisions. Retail Store Planners play a critical role in both new store openings and remodels, making sure that the physical environment supports business goals.

How does a retail store planner typically collaborate with merchandising and operations teams to optimize store layouts?

Retail Store Planners work closely with merchandising and operations teams to ensure that store layouts support both product visibility and operational efficiency. This collaboration often involves regular meetings to review sales data, discuss new product launches, and address logistical challenges. By integrating feedback from these teams, planners can adjust floor plans and fixture placements to enhance the customer experience while supporting inventory management and sales goals. Successful planners are proactive communicators who seek input and adjust their designs to align with the broader business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retail store planner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Retail Store Planner, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in space planning, and a background in retail management or merchandising, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with planogram software (such as JDA or AutoCAD), retail analytics tools, and inventory management systems is common. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and optimizing store layouts. These competencies are crucial for maximizing sales, enhancing the customer shopping experience, and ensuring efficient use of retail space.

What is the difference between Retail Store Planner vs Visual Merchandiser?

To become a retail store planner, candidates typically need a bachelor's degree in retail management, interior design, architecture, or a related field. Gaining experience in retail environments, developing skills in space planning and design software like AutoCAD or SketchUp, and understanding retail operations are important steps. Certifications in project management or design can also enhance prospects in this role.

Job description

Store Planner
Location: San Francisco, CA | Hybrid
At Rothy's, we know there's a better way to do business, and it starts by putting the planet and its people first. More than 225 million single-use plastic bottles and 715,000 pounds of ocean-bound marine plastic have been transformed into our signature thread, creating wardrobe staples that look just as good as they feel.
Striving for zero waste, we combine 3D knitting technology and handcrafted assembly to create machine washable styles that don't compromise on comfort. From classic shoes to carry-everywhere bags, we create essentials for wherever you go.
At Rothy's, building a sustainable future is at the heart of everything we do. We pride ourselves on fostering an inclusive environment at our HQ, retail stores and wholly-owned factory, and are growing our community every day.
About the Team:
Using data, research and expert analytical skills, our Planning & Distribution team helps ensure we have the right products in the right places at the right time. In partnership with cross-functional teams like Production, Digital Commerce, Merchandising and Retail, these wizards forecast, plan and manage our inventory-so we can continue to delight our customers with the products they love.
About the role:
We're looking for a Store Planner to join our Planning & Distribution team and help make sure every Rothy's store has the right product, in the right place, at the right time. As a Store Planner, you'll bring a strong analytical lens and a collaborative spirit to store level assortment, store inventory levels, allocation and replenishment strategy, partnering closely with Retail leadership, Merchandise Planning, Merchandising, Visual Merchandising and Operations to create a great experience for customers wherever they shop with us.
What you'll do:
  • Develop and maintain store level assortment and allocation strategies that balance customer demand, inventory flow and sales goals across all Rothy's retail locations
  • Partner with Planning, Merchandising and Allocation to translate seasonal buys into store specific plans that reflect regional and store level nuances
  • Analyze sell through, inventory turn and in-stock rates to identify opportunities and recommend adjustments to allocation strategy
  • Build and refine store tiering model based on customer profile, store format and historical performance
  • Collaborate with the Retail team to understand store capacity, visual merchandising needs and local market trends
  • Manage replenishment strategies to help ensure the right product is in the right store at the right time
  • Present findings and recommendations to cross-functional partners in a clear, actionable way
  • Support new store openings and closures with tailored assortment and inventory strategies
  • Look for ways to improve planning processes, tools and reporting as our store fleet grows

You are:
  • A natural collaborator who builds strong relationships across Merchandising, Retail, Allocation and Visual Merchandising
  • Detail oriented, with a knack for spotting patterns in data that others might miss
  • Comfortable balancing multiple priorities and deadlines without losing sight of the big picture
  • A clear communicator who can translate complex data into simple, actionable recommendations
  • Curious and proactive, always looking for a better way to solve a planning challenge
  • Adaptable and comfortable navigating ambiguity in a fast growing environment

You have:
  • 4+ years of experience in retail planning, allocation or a related analytical role, ideally in footwear, apparel or another consumer product category
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with planning or allocation systems is a plus
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate data into strategic recommendations
  • Experience partnering with store operations teams and a solid understanding of store-level retail dynamics
  • A bachelor's degree in business, finance, supply chain or a related field, or equivalent experience

Our benefits:
  • Generous paid time off
  • 401k matching
  • Comprehensive health plans for you and your family
  • Supplemental mental health benefits
  • Monthly wellness reimbursement
  • Dog friendly offices
  • Employee Discount Program!

Pay range:
$82,000 - $99,000/annually
Base pay is one part of the total rewards package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work. This role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, as well as a comprehensive benefits package.
