The Role and Why It's Important

As the Human Resource Manager at Hy-Vee, you'll be the go-to HR partner for your store, supporting every employee from their first day through their career here. From recruiting and payroll to employee relations and compliance, your work keeps the store running smoothly and the team feeling supported and valued.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Deliver outstanding customer service by greeting customers warmly and assisting them throughout the store

  • Coordinate all employee information updates in the Workday time and attendance system

  • Counsel department heads and employees on performance reviews, scheduling, benefits, wages, and personnel matters; serve as Insurance Coordinator and 401(k) Coordinator

  • Develop and manage recruiting and retention programs; facilitate the full hiring process including interviewing, placement, orientation, and training

  • Coordinate employee transfers between stores and track vacation and personal days for all store employees

  • Conduct performance reviews and exit interviews; attend weekly staff and assistant manager meetings

  • Make payroll adjustments including bonuses and missed pay raises; transmit sales, hours, adjustments, and accounts receivable to the corporate office weekly

  • Disperse paychecks, W-2s, and Trust Fund and 401(k) reports; distribute company and store communications including birthdays and anniversaries

  • Prepare employee wage and employment verifications, disability claims, and leave of absence requests

  • Record and follow up on Workers Compensation claims and complete accident reports for customers and employees

  • Schedule employees, honor time-off requests, and arrange coverage for call-ins

  • Coordinate quarterly employee meetings, store events, service award programs, and bonus meetings

  • Handle customer complaints and send follow-up and thank-you correspondence

  • Conduct store tours for schools and civic organizations

  • Handle confidential employee records and sensitive information with strict discretion

  • Maintain compliance with Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all company policies

  • Assist in other store areas and take on special projects as needed

  • You'll receive direction and support from: Store Director, Store Manager, and Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home

Your Skills

To be successful in this role, you'll need to be able to:

  • Communicate clearly and professionally in writing and verbally with employees and leadership

  • Interview, counsel, and advise employees and managers with professionalism and discretion

  • Solve practical problems and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Use basic math skills, including fractions, decimals, and percentages

  • Handle confidential employee records and information with strict discretion

  • High school diploma plus 2 to 3 years of HR and accounting coursework required; Hy-Vee experience preferred

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director, Store Manager, and Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home

Direct Reports: All other store positions and any assigned by Store Director

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma plus 2 to 3 years of HR and accounting coursework required

  • Hy-Vee experience preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Physical activity is incidental to the core duties of the role

  • Occasionally walk the floor or facility to observe operations, staff, or product

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to occasionally handle product for demonstration purposes

  • No regular lifting, carrying, or physical exertion required
