What is a resident assistant?

Resident Assistants (RAs) are student leaders who live in college or university residence halls and are responsible for supporting students, building community, and enforcing campus policies. They serve as a resource to residents, helping with personal or academic concerns and organizing events to foster a positive living environment. RAs also handle minor conflicts and work closely with housing staff to ensure student safety and well-being.

What does a resident assistant do?

Resident assistants (RAs) are students at a college or university who provide supervision and support in on-campus dormitories. As a resident assistant, you enforce school rules, engage your fellow students to build camaraderie in your residence hall, and provide academic or emotional support when necessary. You must also file status reports and have regular leadership meetings with school administrators. RAs are paid with free room and board.

How does a resident assistant typically collaborate with other campus departments to support residents?

Resident Assistants (RAs) regularly coordinate with campus departments such as housing, counseling services, and campus security to address residents' needs and ensure a safe living environment. They often serve as a communication bridge, sharing relevant information between students and professional staff while organizing joint events or wellness initiatives. This collaboration helps RAs provide holistic support, respond effectively to emergencies, and connect residents with appropriate resources. Being proactive in these partnerships enhances both the community experience and the RA's professional network on campus.

Do you need a certification to be a resident assistant?

Resident Assistant positions typically do not require formal certifications, but employers often look for strong interpersonal, conflict resolution, and leadership skills. Some institutions may offer training programs or require background checks, but certification is generally not mandatory for the role.

Is it hard to get a resident assistant job?

Getting a resident assistant position can be competitive, as it often requires a good academic record, strong interpersonal skills, and sometimes prior experience or references. The application process typically involves an interview and may include training or certification requirements before starting the role.

Shalom is an Affiliate of the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) with its own set facility philosophy and values. Although a separate employer from the SHA and governed by its own board, the SHA and 'Shalom' are with the goal of ensuring appropriate services for individuals with long term care needs. As an Affiliate partner, the facility sets the program direction with the SHA providing the operating funding, but is an interactive partnership. Cupar & District Nursing Home Inc. is also known as 'SHALOM'. This name was chosen to characterize the wishes of all the sponsoring towns, municipalities and villages, for all residents who will call this their home. Shalom is both a welcome and a farewell. It was the greeting of Jesus to all mankind (touching the very root of the person). The word 'Shalom' is used as a wish for hope, rest, kindness and love.
