Job Summary:
Dr. Daniel Tollin's lab is seeking to hire an Associate Research Professor. The position will focus on IACUC, IRB, and university compliance, lab organization, and inventory, and has reserved time (approximately 50%) to contribute to other aspects of the lab's research. These aspects include utilizing auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), behavior paradigms, in vivo recordings from the auditory brainstem, molecular biology, including inner ear fluorescent immunohistochemistry, and confocal and super resolution microscopy imaging to investigate auditory changes as a result of noise exposed and Alzheimer's induced hearing loss. This position requires high level of project development and experimental design independently and in collaboration with the PI, an expertise to pioneer new tools/techniques, develop/perform rodent surgeries, and supervise and conduct experiments in collaboration with other members in the group. This would be an excellent position for someone who can work independently when needed, drives experimental design and project development, enjoys teamwork in a lab, conducts experiments, and has a strong interest in a longer-term position.
The lab is located within the University of Colorado Anschutz, School of Medicine, Department of Physiology & Biophysics in Aurora, CO. The Associate Research Professor will benefit from a multidisciplinary, vibrant, open, and collegial department. The Tollin lab provides rich opportunities to interact with other biophysics and physiology laboratories within the department, also with an even larger collection of systems neuroscience laboratories studying the neural basis of sensory-motor behaviors.
Key Responsibilities:
Independently plan and perform research projects related to subcortical impairments of auditory processing
Perform non-invasive and invasive electrophysiological measurements of auditory and vestibular pathways
Develop and perform behavioral tasks assessing auditory abilities
Perform immunohistochemistry and microscopy images of cochlear and brainstem tissue
Provide support for the experiments on the blast-evoked hearing and balance loss
Perform cochlear pressure measurements in rodent and human temporal bone
Develop analysis and statistical pipelines for datasets
Oral communication of preliminary results at lab meetings
Oral and written communication of completed work at national or international meetings.
Create figures and write papers, participate in editing, and review other lab members' manuscripts prior to their publications
Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions
Independently review, develop and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects
Provide laboratory science expertise and leadership in study design, study oversight, data management, data analysis and manuscript preparation to assist all levels of investigators, researchers and clinicians on new research activities across a wide range of disciplines

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
PhD in Auditory Neuroscience, Physiology, Neuroscience, or closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Expertise in the inner ear experimental approaches and techniques
Expertise in fluorescent immunohistochemistry of the peripheral and central auditory and vestibular organs, confocal imaging, image analysis, machine-learning based image quantification, tissue clearing, and electrophysiology
Ongoing collaboration with clinical researchers from Otolaryngology department
Experience in molecular biology techniques such as cell culture, including human iPSCs, gene expression, viral gene transfer etc., signal processing, behavioral quantification, coding, animal training, brain and cochlear surgeries, and grant or protocol application and management.
Expertise in research design, development of research hypotheses, and methods to test them.
Experience in collaborative grant writing, supervising postdocs and medical residents in laboratory research, data analysis, interpretation, and publication of the results.
Experience in lab management, including EHS, IACUC, and DEA compliance.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Advanced knowledge of and teaching experience in laboratory techniques, including good laboratory practice, safety procedures, and techniques
Knowledge of IACUC, IRB protocol writing
Effective communication of data, experimental results and their interpretation, both in peer-reviewed publications and at invited conference podium presentations
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
Mastery in interpretation of complex research protocol information and of published methods.
Knowledge of systems neuroscience
Advanced knowledge of animal anatomy and physiology and detail knowledge of the auditory brainstem, vestibular, and cochlear anatomies.
Excellent communication of scientific content across different specialties (e.g. engineers, informaticians, clinicians, statisticians, physicists etc.)
