The Red Hat Foreman (https://theforeman.org/) team is looking for a highly experienced Principal Software Engineer. In this role, you will provide technical leadership in designing, developing, and scaling enterprise-grade systems that manage and automate infrastructure at scale. You will play a key role in shaping architecture, driving innovation, and mentoring engineers, while working closely with cross-functional teams in an Agile environment.. Foreman is a systems management solution in Ruby on Rails. We are a distributed team of engineers from all around the world. Our fully open-sourced stack includes the following technologies: Ruby, Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, Sinatra. Foreman supports provisioning on hypervisors such as VMware, kubevirt, libvirt, cloud services like AWS, GCE, Azure and security compliance framework OpenSCAP. Foreman project has an active community of contributors outside of Red Hat too. You'll have an opportunity to work on real-life issues of an enterprise product with thousands of users.


What you will do:

  • Lead the design and development of scalable, secure, and high-performance features for Red Hat Satellite.

  • Drive architectural decisions and influence long-term technical strategy across components and teams.

  • Collaborate with product management, engineering, and cross-functional teams to define and deliver impactful solutions.

  • Actively contribute to and engage with upstream communities (especially Foreman), aligning downstream product development with upstream innovation.

  • Champion Agile practices and help teams continuously improve delivery, quality, and efficiency.

  • Design and implement containerized solutions leveraging modern container platforms (e.g., Kubernetes/OpenShift).

  • Lead initiatives in applying AI/ML, including designing and building AI agents to improve development workflows, automation, and product capabilities.

  • Mentor and guide senior engineers, fostering technical excellence and knowledge sharing.

  • Ensure high standards for code quality, testing, security, and maintainability.

  • Review and test contributions from community members

  • Performing live demos of your work on regular basis to project users and developers

  • Drive the end to end development of complex functionality, which includes design, implementation, testing, presentation.

What you will bring:

  • Experience with Linux OS on user level

  • DevOps skills: from writing Container Files to adding tests to maintaining CI/CD pipelines.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal local supervision as a part of a geographically distributed team.

  • Deep experience using and operating Linux.

  • Experience with GitHub actions, GitLab pipelines or similar CI/CD systems

  • Extensive experience in software engineering, with a strong track record in building and scaling complex systems.

  • Proven experience working in Agile development environments.

  • Hands-on experience with the upstream Foreman community (development, contributions, or collaboration).

  • Strong experience with container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift).

  • Experience designing and implementing AI/ML solutions, including building AI agents or automation systems.

  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, Ruby, Go, or Java.

  • Experience with REST APIs, distributed systems, and cloud-native architectures.

  • Deep understanding of software design principles, system architecture, and performance optimization.

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills across globally distributed teams.

Plus:

  • Prior experience working on infrastructure management or lifecycle management platforms.

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.

  • Familiarity with Red Hat technologies and ecosystem.

  • Contributions to open-source projects beyond Foreman.

  • Networking or Linux administration skills, experience with configuration management

  • Programmatic/user knowledge of VMware or other hypervisor/cloud provider

The salary range for this position is $151,510.00 - $249,950.00. Actual offer will be based on your qualifications.

Pay Transparency

Red Hat determines compensation based on several factors including but not limited to job location, experience, applicable skills and training, external market value, and internal pay equity. Annual salary is one component of Red Hat's compensation package. This position may also be eligible for bonus, commission, and/or equity. For positions with Remote-US locations, the actual salary range for the position may differ based on location but will be commensurate with job duties and relevant work experience.
