How does a remote science project manager effectively coordinate with distributed research teams and stakeholders?

Remote science project managers typically rely on a combination of virtual collaboration tools, regular video meetings, and detailed project management software to keep all team members aligned. They spend a significant portion of their time facilitating communication among scientists, engineers, and external partners, ensuring that everyone stays updated on project milestones and deliverables. It’s common to face challenges like different time zones, varied work cultures, and ensuring data security, but establishing clear communication protocols and regular check-ins can help overcome these hurdles. Building strong relationships remotely and proactively addressing potential roadblocks are key to project success in this setting.

What is remote science project management?

Remote science project management involves overseeing and coordinating scientific research projects from a location outside of the traditional office or laboratory setting. This role includes planning, organizing, and monitoring project progress, managing teams, ensuring deadlines are met, and facilitating communication among researchers and stakeholders using digital tools. Remote science project managers must be adept at virtual collaboration, project tracking, and problem-solving to ensure the successful completion of scientific objectives. This role is increasingly common as organizations adopt flexible and distributed work models.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Science Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Science Project Manager, you need a solid background in scientific research or engineering, project management experience, and often a relevant degree such as a STEM or Project Management qualification. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Trello, or Microsoft Project, as well as proficiency in virtual collaboration platforms, is typically required. Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills are crucial for coordinating remote teams and managing complex timelines. These abilities ensure that scientific projects are completed efficiently, on time, and with effective collaboration across distributed teams.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Microsoft D365 Project Manager based in Netherlands.

This role is focused on the successful delivery of complex Microsoft Dynamics 365 transformation projects across international environments, ensuring disciplined execution from planning through to go-live. The position plays a critical role in managing delivery outcomes across scope, schedule, quality, and customer readiness, with a strong emphasis on structured execution and proactive risk management. You will coordinate multiple technical and functional teams, ensuring alignment across architecture, development, testing, and business stakeholders. Operating within large-scale ERP programs, you will bring clarity to complexity and ensure delivery risks are identified and managed early. The role is highly hands-on, requiring strong control over day-to-day execution while contributing to governance and strategic delivery planning. It is ideal for a delivery-focused professional who thrives in structured, fast-moving, and international consulting environments.

Accountabilities:
  • Own the day-to-day delivery of assigned Microsoft Dynamics 365 projects or major workstreams, ensuring alignment across scope, schedule, quality, and readiness
  • Contribute to pre-sales and project mobilization by supporting delivery planning, budgeting, governance setup, and risk identification
  • Co-author Statements of Work (SOW), including assumptions, risks, delivery structure, and change control considerations
  • Build and maintain integrated project plans covering architecture, build, testing, data, integrations, and deployment activities
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams including architects, developers, consultants, testers, and customer stakeholders
  • Ensure backlog items, requirements, and acceptance criteria are clearly defined, prioritized, and ready for delivery
  • Drive testing and cutover readiness, including environment coordination, defect management, and go-live preparation
  • Maintain strong RAID management (Risks, Assumptions, Issues, and Dependencies) and proactively escalate where needed
  • Run governance forums such as steering committees, risk reviews, and change control boards to ensure effective decision-making
  • Communicate clear and factual project status updates to customers, senior leadership, and internal stakeholders
  • Support continuous improvement of delivery frameworks and standard working practices
Requirements:
  • 5+ years of experience delivering Microsoft Dynamics 365 ERP or comparable enterprise transformation projects
  • Strong experience in complex, multi-stream, international delivery environments, ideally within consulting settings
  • Solid understanding of ERP delivery lifecycles including planning, requirements management, testing, and deployment
  • Experience working with structured governance models and delivery frameworks
  • Proficiency in RAID management and ability to anticipate and manage delivery risks effectively
  • Hands-on experience with DevOps or similar delivery/project tracking tools
  • Strong ability to simplify complexity and drive clarity in high-pressure environments
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence without authority
  • Strong commercial awareness and understanding of delivery economics and trade-offs
  • Structured, proactive, and execution-focused mindset with strong problem-solving abilities
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally (minimum 35%) depending on project needs
Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation aligned with senior project delivery expertise
  • Clear career progression path from Project Coordinator/PMO to Project Manager, Senior Project Manager, and Program Manager
  • Remote or hybrid working flexibility depending on location
  • Opportunity to work on large-scale international Microsoft Dynamics 365 transformation programs
  • Exposure to global clients, markets, and complex enterprise environments
  • Strong focus on professional development, coaching, and capability growth
  • Collaborative and team-oriented culture focused on delivery excellence
  • Freedom and responsibility to shape your working approach and career progression
