How does a remote science project manager effectively coordinate with distributed research teams and stakeholders?

Remote science project managers typically rely on a combination of virtual collaboration tools, regular video meetings, and detailed project management software to keep all team members aligned. They spend a significant portion of their time facilitating communication among scientists, engineers, and external partners, ensuring that everyone stays updated on project milestones and deliverables. It’s common to face challenges like different time zones, varied work cultures, and ensuring data security, but establishing clear communication protocols and regular check-ins can help overcome these hurdles. Building strong relationships remotely and proactively addressing potential roadblocks are key to project success in this setting.

What is remote science project management?

Remote science project management involves overseeing and coordinating scientific research projects from a location outside of the traditional office or laboratory setting. This role includes planning, organizing, and monitoring project progress, managing teams, ensuring deadlines are met, and facilitating communication among researchers and stakeholders using digital tools. Remote science project managers must be adept at virtual collaboration, project tracking, and problem-solving to ensure the successful completion of scientific objectives. This role is increasingly common as organizations adopt flexible and distributed work models.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Science Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Science Project Manager, you need a solid background in scientific research or engineering, project management experience, and often a relevant degree such as a STEM or Project Management qualification. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Trello, or Microsoft Project, as well as proficiency in virtual collaboration platforms, is typically required. Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills are crucial for coordinating remote teams and managing complex timelines. These abilities ensure that scientific projects are completed efficiently, on time, and with effective collaboration across distributed teams.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Customer Success Specialist - Food Science based in Netherlands.

This remote opportunity is ideal for a customer-focused professional who enjoys building lasting client relationships while supporting businesses in regulated industries. In this role, you will serve as the primary point of contact throughout the customer journey, providing consultative guidance, coordinating projects, and ensuring an outstanding client experience from inquiry to completion. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver laboratory testing and labeling solutions while helping customers understand technical information in a clear and practical way. The position combines customer success, inside sales, and project coordination in a dynamic remote environment where organization, responsiveness, and communication are essential. This is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful impact by helping customers achieve compliance and successfully bring products to market.

Accountabilities:

As a Customer Success Specialist, you will own the customer relationship from the initial inquiry through project completion, ensuring a seamless and high-quality experience. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Responding promptly to inbound web and phone inquiries while serving as the primary point of contact for customers.
  • Conducting consultative conversations to understand customer objectives and recommend appropriate laboratory testing, labeling, and related services.
  • Preparing, presenting, and following up on proposals while guiding qualified opportunities through the sales process.
  • Managing customer relationships after project initiation by coordinating onboarding, project timelines, status updates, report delivery, and follow-up activities.
  • Collaborating with internal teams to ensure laboratory testing, labeling projects, and customer commitments remain aligned.
  • Monitoring project progress, addressing customer questions, resolving routine billing inquiries, and maintaining accurate documentation within CRM and project management systems.
  • Identifying opportunities for additional services while maintaining a trusted advisor relationship with customers.
  • Contributing customer feedback and process improvement ideas to enhance service quality and the overall customer experience.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate combines customer relationship management expertise with strong organizational skills and the ability to communicate technical information effectively. Candidates should possess:

  • At least 5 years of experience in customer success, account management, consultative inside sales, business development, or another customer-facing role.
  • Proven experience managing multiple customer accounts, sales opportunities, and concurrent projects with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills with a professional and customer-focused approach.
  • Ability to understand technical services and translate complex concepts into practical, easy-to-understand guidance.
  • Experience using CRM platforms such as HubSpot, along with invoicing tools like QuickBooks or equivalent software.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams, and project management platforms.
  • Ability to work independently within a collaborative remote environment while maintaining a strong sense of urgency and accountability.
  • Availability to work full-time during Mountain Standard Time (MST) or Pacific Standard Time (PST) business hours.
  • Experience in food science, laboratory testing, food manufacturing, dietary supplements, pet food, or another regulated industry is preferred.
  • Knowledge of food labeling regulations, nutrition facts panels, FDA, USDA, or AAFCO requirements is considered an advantage.
Benefits:
  • Full-time remote position with the flexibility to work from anywhere.
  • Opportunity to manage customer relationships in a consultative, non-cold-calling environment.
  • Exposure to laboratory testing, food science, regulatory compliance, and product labeling projects.
  • Collaborative team culture with close interaction across customer success, operations, and technical teams.
  • Modern technology stack including HubSpot, Monday.com, QuickBooks, Microsoft Office, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Opportunity to develop expertise within the food science and regulatory compliance sector.
  • Competitive compensation package based on qualifications and experience.
