How much do remote robot design jobs pay per hour?

As of May 31, 2026, the average hourly pay for remote robot design in the United States is $28.24, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $22.12 and $32.93 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Robot Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Robot Designer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering, robotics, and computer-aided design (CAD), typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or C++), robotics simulation software (like ROS or Gazebo), and version control systems is essential. Creative problem-solving, effective remote communication, and strong project management skills help individuals excel in collaborative, distributed teams. These abilities are vital to efficiently design, prototype, and refine robotic systems while working remotely with cross-functional teams.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote robot design roles?

One of the main challenges in remote robot design is effective collaboration with team members who may be distributed across different time zones and disciplines, such as mechanical engineering, software development, and electronics. Clear communication and strong project management skills are essential to align design specifications and integrate feedback efficiently. Additionally, testing prototypes and troubleshooting issues remotely can require creative use of simulation tools and remote access technologies. Professionals in this field often need to be proactive in seeking input and sharing progress to ensure project milestones are met and the final product meets performance expectations.

What is remote robot design?

Remote robot design involves creating, developing, and testing robotic systems from a distance, often using digital tools and online collaboration platforms. Designers use software to plan and simulate robot functions, enabling teams to work together without being physically present in the same location. This approach allows for greater flexibility, access to global expertise, and the ability to rapidly prototype and iterate on ideas. Remote robot design is increasingly popular in industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and research, where collaboration across different regions is essential.

Job description

Seeking an Engineering Technician to support the design and development of engineering systems within a fast-paced, collaborative environment. This role will focus on CAD modeling and mechanical design, contributing to projects involving lab equipment, system development, and potentially robotic assembly.

This is a hands-on opportunity to work with a small, high-performing engineering team, with flexibility in work environment (remote, hybrid, or onsite) and the potential for contract-to-hire conversion. The team is looking to bring on multiple engineers, starting with a more senior-level hire, followed by additional mid-level contributors.

Job Description
In this role, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining CAD models and mechanical designs using SolidWorks. You will support engineering initiatives by contributing to system design, prototyping, and modeling efforts, including work related to lab equipment and mechanical assemblies.
You will collaborate closely with internal engineering teams to ensure design quality and alignment with project goals. This includes applying strong modeling techniques, contributing to design improvements, and supporting overall engineering execution.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a small team environment, can operate with a high level of autonomy, and brings strong attention to detail in mechanical design and CAD development.

Minimum Qualifications
• 3–5+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience
• Strong experience with CAD tools, specifically SolidWorks
• Experience with mechanical design and modeling
• Associate’s degree or higher in Engineering or related field
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small team

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with robotic assembly systems
• Master modeling techniques
• Experience working with lab equipment
• Familiarity with PMD systems
• Experience in fast-paced or startup environments

Education & Experience
• Associate’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field
• 3–5+ years of relevant industry experience

Type: Contract
Duration: 6+ Months (Potential for Contract-to-Hire)
Location: Menlo Park, CA (Remote or Onsite)
Schedule: 40h/week
Pay Rate Range: $45-55/h
