Job description

THE SPENCE SCHOOL
UPPER SCHOOL ROBOTICS COACH
Part-time, to begin September 2026
Overview
The Spence School seeks a dynamic educator with experience working with high school students to serve as the coach of the Upper School Robotics FIRST Tech Challenge Team.
Responsibilities
  • Attend and facilitate one to three team practices a week, which are held after school until early evening. More frequent meetings required during peak season (November - March), including some Saturdays, as needed.
  • Support the students' robot design and construction along with associated research projects.
  • Coordinate with student club heads to plan practices and foster an inclusive and collaborative team community.
  • Communicate with the school about supplies and competitions.
  • Attend and supervise all weekend competitions (approximately 2-3 per year). These full-day events are held at various locations in New York City.

Qualifications
  • Experience coaching and/or participating in competitive robotics; FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) experience preferred
  • Experience working with high-school students in a mentoring, coaching, or teaching capacity
  • Capacity to provide students with guidance on how to break down problems, delegate tasks, and set progress goals
  • Approaches work with optimism, kindness, and a sense of humor
  • Demonstrates cultural competency and skills engaging with and learning from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • A bachelor's degree

Salary range: $5,000-$12,000 based on weekly time commitment
