What is a remote RFID engineer?

Remote RFID Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and manage RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) systems while working from a remote location. They are responsible for developing solutions that enable the tracking and identification of objects using RFID technology, which is widely used in industries like logistics, retail, and manufacturing. These engineers configure hardware and software, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure system integration, all while collaborating with teams and clients online. Their remote role allows businesses to leverage RFID expertise without geographic limitations.

What are common challenges faced by remote RFID engineers when troubleshooting hardware issues remotely?

Remote RFID Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited physical access to devices, relying heavily on local staff for hands-on troubleshooting. Communication is key, as they must provide clear, step-by-step instructions to on-site personnel who may not have technical expertise. Additionally, diagnosing hardware versus software issues can be more complex without immediate access to equipment, making detailed documentation and remote diagnostic tools essential. Building strong relationships with the onsite team and employing effective remote support strategies can significantly help overcome these obstacles.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote RFID engineer?

To thrive as a Remote RFID Engineer, you need expertise in RFID technologies, electrical engineering, and network protocols, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with RFID hardware, middleware, programming languages (such as C/C++ or Python), and system integration tools is crucial, and certifications like CompTIA RFID+ can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills help you excel in remote environments and collaborate effectively with diverse teams. These abilities are essential to ensure seamless RFID system implementation, troubleshooting, and ongoing support for geographically distributed projects.

Job description

Overview
We're hiring an Android Engineer to join our growing mobile team. You'll work alongside our principal engineer and backend platform teams to build and improve our RFID mobile app for Zebra Android devices.
This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll write Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, integrate hardware SDKs, and help us ship secure, stable features into production. You'll work on real-world device interactions like barcode scanning, RFID reads, and offline caching, all while learning how to develop within DoD environments.
Remote (U.S. Based) | Some Travel Required
LMI is a new breed of digital solutions provider dedicated to accelerating government impact with innovation and speed. Investing in technology and prototypes ahead of need, LMI brings commercial-grade platforms and mission-ready AI to federal agencies at commercial speed.
Leveraging our mission-ready technology and solutions, proven expertise in federal deployment, and strategic relationships, we enhance outcomes for the government, efficiently and effectively. With a focus on agility and collaboration, LMI serves the defense, space, healthcare, and energy sectors-helping agencies navigate complexity and outpace change. Headquartered in Tysons, Virginia, LMI is committed to delivering impactful results that strengthen missions and drive lasting value.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do
  • Build new features and maintain our Android app for rugged Zebra handhelds.
  • Work in a multi module code base
  • Write clean, reliable Kotlin and Jetpack Compose code that interacts with RFID, barcode, and sensor data.
  • Implement offline data handling, local caching, and secure storage.
  • Work with our backend (.NET) and frontend (Vue.js) teams to ensure seamless app syncing and user experience.
  • Help test and troubleshoot edge-case device issues in the field.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical planning, and quality improvements as part of a tight-knit dev team.

Qualifications
What We're Looking For
  • 2-5 years of experience building Android applications with Kotlin, coroutines, and flows.
  • Strong understanding of how Jetpack Compose works (Recomposition, stability, performance tuning).
  • Experience implementing Dagger Hilt dependency injection and Android Room database solutions for offline-first architecture.
  • Interest in working with hardware integrations (RFID, barcode scanning, etc.).
  • Strong debugging skills and attention to details.
  • Use unit, UI, and instrumentation tests to ensure reliability and stability in rugged hardware contexts, including edge-case deployment environments where stability is critical.
  • Willingness to learn about cybersecurity, app hardening, and DoD deployment constraints.
  • US. Citizenship required. Ability to obtain a Secret clearance.

Bonus Points For
  • Demonstrable expertise in designing modular architectures that optimize build times, ensure scalability, and streamline library management.
  • Experience managing devices and profiles within a MDM.
  • Experience with Zebra handhelds or Zebra SDKs.
  • Exposure to RMF/ATO, app hardening, or IL4/5 environments.
  • Familiarity with RFID workflows or asset tracking use cases.
  • Past work with secure, rugged mobile applications in industrial or defense settings.

Why This Role Matters
You'll help build tools that warfighters and logisticians rely on to keep operations moving. Every tag scanned, every asset tracked, your code makes that happen.
