What is remote program management?

Remote program management is the practice of overseeing and coordinating multiple related projects or initiatives from a location outside of a traditional office setting, often leveraging digital tools and virtual collaboration platforms. Program managers in remote roles are responsible for aligning project objectives with organizational goals, managing resources, and ensuring effective communication among distributed teams. This approach allows organizations to access talent globally and maintain productivity without the constraints of physical offices. Remote program management requires strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills to ensure successful program delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote program manager?

To thrive as a Remote Program Manager, you need strong project management expertise, strategic planning abilities, and a background in business or a related field, often supported by a PMP or similar certification. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Jira, or Trello, and experience with virtual collaboration platforms such as Slack or Zoom, are typically required. Exceptional communication, organizational skills, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for leading distributed teams and managing stakeholders remotely. These competencies ensure efficient program delivery, foster alignment across locations, and drive successful outcomes in a virtual environment.

How does a remote program manager effectively coordinate projects and maintain communication with distributed teams?

Remote Program Managers typically use a combination of project management software, regular virtual meetings, and clear documentation to coordinate tasks across multiple locations and time zones. Effective communication is key, so they often establish structured routines—such as weekly status updates or daily stand-ups—to ensure alignment and quickly address any blockers. Building strong relationships with team members through transparent communication and fostering a culture of accountability are essential to overcoming the unique challenges of remote collaboration.

Director of Program Management - Electronic Security

Raleigh, NC • On-site, Remote

Job description

We are seeking a Director of Program Management to build and lead the program management function for a rapidly growing national security and life safety services company.

The company supports complex, multi site, national, and global customers across security, technical services, managed services, public safety, and data center environments. As the business has grown, the need for a consistent, scalable program management structure has become increasingly important.

This is a build role. You will establish the standards, governance, processes, and accountability required to make complex customer programs predictable and repeatable. You will also lead and develop the existing program management team, raising the level of execution without relying on a wholesale team rebuild.

The ideal candidate has built or significantly matured a program management function before and is ready to take ownership of creating the standard rather than operating within someone else's. This person has strong knowledge with access control/CCTV systems and the low voltage industry.

Responsibilities

• Establish and own program management standards for the company's largest and most complex customer programs

• Develop a scalable governance model covering escalation procedures, risk management, change management, reporting, documentation, and customer communication

• Create consistent program management processes that can be applied across multi site and national accounts

• Evaluate the existing program management team, identify gaps, and establish clear expectations for performance and execution

• Coach and develop program managers to a higher level of accountability, organization, and customer management

• Serve as a senior point of contact for customer leadership and act as a trusted advisor on program strategy and execution

• Translate customer objectives and business requirements into clear execution plans across multiple workstreams

• Participate in strategic customer meetings and executive business reviews

• Partner with Sales and Business Development on major pursuits, renewals, and expansions

• Present the company's program management capabilities and value proposition to prospective and existing customers

• Develop performance metrics and reporting that demonstrate the value of strong program management

• Track and improve key outcomes including customer escalations, time to value, project execution, renewals, and account expansion

• Develop internal case studies and best practices that can be replicated across the organization

• Work closely with operations, sales, field teams, technical teams, and executive leadership to improve overall program execution

Qualifications

• 8 to 15+ years of experience in program management, project management, or a related discipline with electronic security (access control, CCTV)

• Proven experience leading large scale national or global customer programs

• Demonstrated experience building, implementing, or significantly maturing a program management function

• Experience developing methodologies, governance structures, standards, reporting, and accountability systems

• Experience managing and developing existing program managers, including addressing performance gaps and raising expectations

• Strong executive presence and the ability to work directly with senior customer stakeholders

• Experience selling or co selling the value of a service or solution to customer executives

• Experience managing multi site, multi workstream programs in a field services, construction, low voltage, electronic security, life safety, telecom, data center, or comparable infrastructure environment

• Strong understanding of program financials, risk management, change management, customer relationships, and operational execution

• Excellent communication and organizational skills

• Ability to operate strategically while remaining close enough to execution to understand where programs are succeeding or breaking down

• PMP, PgMP, or equivalent certification is preferred but not required

What Makes This Role Different

This is not a role focused on maintaining an established program management structure.

You will be responsible for building it.

The company has reached a point where its customer base and service offerings require a more formal and scalable approach to program management. The opportunity is to define what good looks like, implement the structure, develop the team, and create a program management function that becomes an important part of how the company sells and delivers its services.

The successful candidate will have significant influence over the processes, standards, metrics, and expectations that shape the function going forward.

Compensation and Travel

Base Salary: $160,000

Bonus: 20% bonus potential

Travel: Approximately 25%, including travel to customer sites and company branches

Location: Raleigh, NC preferred. Remote candidates will be considered with the expectation of regular travel.

Why Join

This is an opportunity for an experienced program management leader who wants to build rather than maintain.

You will have the authority to establish the framework, improve the existing team, work directly with major customers, and demonstrate the business value of disciplined program management. As the company continues to grow, the function you build will have significant opportunity to expand with it.
