What is remote packaging development?

Remote packaging development refers to the process of designing, testing, and improving packaging solutions for products while working from a location outside of a traditional office or laboratory. Professionals in this field use digital collaboration tools to communicate with teams, suppliers, and manufacturers. They are responsible for ensuring that packaging meets both functional and aesthetic requirements, complies with regulations, and supports the brand. This role often involves virtual prototyping, material selection, and coordination with global partners to streamline the packaging process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote packaging development specialist?

To thrive as a Remote Packaging Development Specialist, you need a solid background in packaging engineering, materials science, or a related field, often supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with CAD software, packaging design platforms, and knowledge of industry standards and testing protocols are typically required. Strong project management, problem-solving, and cross-functional communication skills help you excel in remote collaboration and innovation. These skills ensure the creation of effective, sustainable packaging solutions that meet product requirements and regulatory standards while facilitating teamwork from a distance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote packaging development roles, and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals working in Remote Packaging Development often encounter challenges related to cross-functional collaboration, as they need to communicate effectively with design, manufacturing, and supply chain teams who may also be working remotely or across different time zones. Ensuring that packaging prototypes meet quality standards without in-person oversight can also be demanding. These challenges are typically addressed by leveraging robust digital collaboration tools, maintaining clear and frequent communication, and setting up regular virtual meetings to review progress and resolve issues quickly. Additionally, many organizations invest in virtual simulation and prototyping software to streamline the development process and maintain quality.

Job description

Outside Sales Representative — New Territory (Richmond, VA or Winchester, VA)

Location: Remote — based in Richmond, VA or Winchester, VA

Compensation: $80,000–$120,000 base salary for first two years (DOE) + commission, transitioning to uncapped commission-only thereafter. Most reps earn $200K OTE, with top performers earning up to $1M+.

Benefits: Full benefits package, car allowance, and gas card, 401k+ match, PTO

About the Opportunity

A booming, privately-owned packaging company is looking for a driven outside sales hunter to build out a brand-new territory. This is a true greenfield opportunity — you won't be inheriting an existing book of business. Instead, you'll have the chance to build your own client base and reap the long-term financial rewards of an uncapped commission structure once established.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Proactively generate new business from the ground up
  • Service and grow existing accounts
  • Function as a true outside sales "hunter" — not an account manager sitting on a static book
  • Prospect independently — no leads are provided by the company
  • Cold call, network, and get in front of manufacturers directly
  • Build relationships from scratch with new customers
  • Win new accounts rather than take over pre-established relationships
  • Identify and pursue opportunities the company hasn't tapped into before
  • Google Workspace

Requirements

  • Experience: 3–5+ years of sales experience in packaging or industrial sales
  • Background: Open to candidates from titles such as Outside Sales Rep, Account Manager, Territory Business Manager, or Business Development Manager
  • Education: No degree or certification required
  • Industry: Packaging or industrial required
