Mediators need to be adept at using video conferencing tools and establishing clear communication protocols to keep sessions productive and secure. It's helpful to set expectations for all parties beforehand, check that everyone is comfortable with the technology, and create a structured agenda to maintain focus. With preparation and flexibility, remote mediators can foster a collaborative environment and help parties reach effective resolutions, similar to in-person sessions.

These skills and qualities are essential to effectively resolve disputes and ensure fair outcomes while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism in a virtual environment.

What is remote mediation?

Remote mediation is a conflict resolution process where a neutral third party, known as a mediator, helps disputing parties reach an agreement using online communication tools instead of meeting in person. This can include video conferencing, phone calls, or secure messaging platforms. Remote mediation is often used in legal, workplace, or family disputes when in-person meetings are not possible or convenient. It offers flexibility, can reduce costs, and allows parties to participate from different locations. The process remains confidential and follows the same ethical standards as traditional mediation.
