Job description

Managing Editor The Ark, Tiburon, Calif.

The Ark is an independent, locally owned weekly serving Tiburon, Belvedere and Strawberry, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, and we're looking for someone to run the newsroom day to day.

You'll set assignments and the weekly budget, manage two reporters and our freelancers, run the editorial meeting and own the editorial calendar and our three special sections. You'll share the editing with the executive editor. You'll work with reporters to guide and develop stories, and you'll choose your own enterprise reporting. The job carries no routine beat, but everyone here writes, including briefs and breaking news alongside your own work.

The job is open because our assistant editor is moving on after 10 years.

We're print-first, and we think getting it right beats getting it first.

Who we're looking for. We're open to an experienced editor and equally open to a strong reporter ready for a first editing job. You should have several years in newsrooms, print experience strongly preferred, and real experience covering government boards and meetings. You're an ace copy editor whose bible is the AP Stylebook, and your own copy files clean. Familiarity with the California Public Records Act and the Brown Act is an advantage.

This is a hybrid role: Tuesdays and Wednesdays in our downtown Tiburon office, Mondays remote for production, Thursdays and Fridays remote for heads-down editing. Occasional evening and rare weekend work.

Compensation

  • Fully paid Kaiser Permanente medical and vision, and Humana dental.
  • ~16-day paid winter-holiday office closure, pre-Christmas through post-New Year's, aligned with the school district.
  • Nine additional paid holidays, nine accruable sick days, two weeks accruable vacation.
  • Fidelity SIMPLE IRA with 3% company match.
  • $75,000 annually, exempt.

To apply. Send a rsum and three to five clips to jobs@thearknewspaper.com. A cover letter is welcome but not required a few lines in the email about why this job interests you is plenty. If you have editing samples, include one; we'll ask for more later. Candidates should live in the Bay Area or be willing to relocate; we can't pay relocation expenses.

We read every application and will respond to everyone, one way or the other, by Oct. 1. We're a three-person newsroom, so email is much better than a phone call.

The Ark is owned by its publisher and its executive editor.

The Ark was named the nations best small community newspaper for 2026 by the National Newspaper Association and a second-place general-excellence finisher in this years California Journalism Awards, first among print newspapers in its division.

Salary/Compensation: $75,000 per year
