Remote Level 2 It Support information

What is a remote level 2 IT support?

Remote Level 2 IT Support professionals provide technical assistance to users by resolving more complex IT issues that cannot be solved by Level 1 support. They work remotely to troubleshoot software, hardware, and network problems, often using remote access tools and advanced diagnostic methods. These specialists may also escalate unresolved issues to higher-level engineers, maintain documentation, and contribute to system improvements. Strong communication skills and in-depth technical knowledge are essential for this role.

What skills and qualifications are needed for remote level 2 IT support?

To excel as a Remote Level 2 IT Support specialist, you need advanced troubleshooting skills, strong knowledge of operating systems and networks, and usually a relevant IT degree or certifications like CompTIA A+ or Microsoft Certified: Windows Support. Familiarity with remote desktop tools, ticketing systems, and diagnostic utilities is essential for resolving complex user issues. Outstanding communication, patience, and problem-solving abilities help build trust and efficiently assist users remotely. These competencies ensure timely resolution of technical problems, minimize downtime, and maintain high levels of user satisfaction in a distributed work environment.

What challenges do remote level 2 IT support professionals face and how can they address them?

Remote Level 2 IT Support professionals often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex technical issues without physical access to devices, managing multiple support tickets simultaneously, and communicating clearly with end-users who may have varying levels of technical knowledge. To address these challenges, it's important to leverage remote diagnostic tools, maintain organized ticket management, and develop strong communication skills to guide users through solutions. Regular collaboration with Level 1 and Level 3 support teams also helps ensure escalated issues are resolved efficiently and knowledge is shared across the team.

Job description

Requisition ID:  97060

NextEra Analytics offers energy consulting services using industry-leading scientific analysis for planning, siting, forecasting and optimizing all forms of energy projects. Our optimization and analytics platforms integrate open-source technologies to leverage massive, diverse sets of utility operating data. This enables rapid development of operational solutions. Applying expertise in advanced mathematics, data and physical sciences, we solve some of the hardest problems facing the energy industry.

Position Specific Description

We are seeking an experienced Senior System Administrator to support and advance a growing technology organization of software engineering, data science, and business professionals. This role is responsible for the administration, reliability, security, and continuous improvement of cloud-based and internal IT environments, endpoint technologies, and workplace systems.

The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on technical expertise with sound operational judgment and a service-oriented mindset. You will operate with a high degree of autonomy, lead complex troubleshooting efforts, improve infrastructure and support processes, and serve as a trusted technical partner to development, engineering, security, and business teams.

Key Responsibilities & Expectations

1. Cloud & Systems Administration

  • Environment Administration: Administer and support cloud-based and internal IT environments used by software engineering, data science, and business teams.
  • Cloud Infrastructure: Design, implement, configure, and maintain reliable cloud solutions that support development and production-adjacent workflows.
  • Infrastructure Enablement: Partner with development teams to build, deploy, and maintain infrastructure while promoting scalable, supportable, and secure practices.
  • Platform Reliability: Monitor system health, troubleshoot performance issues, and implement improvements that increase availability, resilience, and operational efficiency.
  • Technical Standards: Establish and maintain system administration standards, configurations, procedures, and operational controls.

2. IT Support & Service Delivery

  • Advanced Troubleshooting: Lead the diagnosis and resolution of complex hardware, software, identity, access, connectivity, and infrastructure issues.
  • Request Management: Triage and prioritize incoming IT work requests based on urgency, business impact, and technical risk.
  • Escalation Support: Serve as a senior escalation point for technical issues that require deeper analysis, cross-functional coordination, or advanced system knowledge.
  • Service Ownership: Manage incidents and support requests through resolution while communicating status, risks, dependencies, and next steps clearly.
  • Root-Cause Analysis: Identify recurring issues, determine underlying causes, and implement durable corrective actions rather than temporary workarounds.

3. Endpoint & Workplace Technology

  • Endpoint Administration: Oversee the provisioning, configuration, security, maintenance, and support of laptops, peripherals, and related endpoint devices.
  • Lifecycle Management: Improve device deployment, patching, upgrade, inventory, compliance, and replacement processes.
  • Audio Visual Support: Provide advanced support for conference room, presentation, and collaboration technologies, including complex troubleshooting and vendor coordination.
  • Workplace Reliability: Ensure employees have secure, dependable, and effective technology for both in-office and remote work.
  • Technology Evaluation: Assess new endpoint, collaboration, and workplace technologies and make recommendations based on supportability, security, cost, and user experience.

4. Automation, AI & Operational Efficiency

  • AI-Augmented Administration: Use AI assistants and related toolsets to accelerate troubleshooting, improve documentation, analyze technical issues, and enhance support and administration workflows.
  • Responsible AI Use: Validate AI-generated outputs and maintain full accountability for the accuracy, security, and appropriateness of technical decisions.
  • Automation: Develop scripts, workflows, and automated processes that reduce manual effort, improve consistency, and accelerate service delivery.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and implement opportunities to standardize, simplify, and modernize IT operations.
  • Operational Documentation: Create and maintain runbooks, system documentation, support procedures, configuration standards, and knowledge-base content.

5. Security, Risk & Operational Resilience

  • Security-Focused Administration: Apply security best practices across cloud services, endpoints, identity systems, and internal environments.
  • Access Governance: Support secure access provisioning, permission reviews, account lifecycle management, and least-privilege principles.
  • Patch & Configuration Management: Maintain secure system configurations and ensure timely remediation of vulnerabilities and outdated software.
  • Operational Resilience: Develop recovery procedures, escalation paths, and support processes that improve service continuity and reduce operational risk.
  • Cross-Functional Security Partnership: Work closely with cybersecurity, compliance, and risk teams to address findings and implement appropriate controls.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in systems administration, cloud operations, infrastructure support, endpoint management, or a related technical role.
  • Demonstrated experience administering and supporting cloud-based and internal enterprise environments.
  • Strong knowledge of operating systems, identity and access management, networking fundamentals, endpoint technologies, and enterprise productivity platforms.
  • Experience supporting software engineering, development, or data science teams in a technology-focused environment.
  • Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues using structured troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
  • Experience with scripting, automation, infrastructure tooling, or configuration management.
  • Experience with endpoint provisioning, patching, device management, inventory, and security controls.
  • Strong technical documentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead technical initiatives, manage competing priorities, and operate with limited supervision.
  • Experience using AI assistants, automation tools, and related technologies to improve productivity while maintaining appropriate validation, judgment, and security controls.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code, scripting, and automation technologies.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Terraform, PowerShell, Python, Bash, or configuration management platforms.

  • Knowledge of cloud security, endpoint security, access governance, vulnerability management, and compliance practices.
