This internship opportunity is only available to graduate students currently enrolled at select APA Internal Internship Program academic partner institutions: Howard University, Montclair State University, or University of Virginia. Applications from students outside of these academic institutions will not be considered.

About the Office & Position

Child and Adolescent Learning and Well-being (Psychology Team)

APAโ€™s Child and Adolescent Learning and Well-being Team seeks to promote the advancement, application, and communication of psychological science and knowledge to benefit PK-12 schools and education. We do this by:

  • Promoting the advancement of psychological science by generating new insights into how psychology informs and strengthens K-12 education.
  • Making the full breadth of psychological science accessible and understandable to students, educators, the public, and key decision makers.
  • Advancing psychology through (inter)national engagement, association efforts, and meaningful collaborations.
  • Acting as an authoritative voice for psychology in decisions related to PK-12 schools and education.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Regularly attend and actively participate in team meetings.
  • Complete work with excellence.
  • Maintain scientific curiosity and a desire for professional growth.
  • Communicate honestly and in a timely manner.
  • Interns will generally be expected to work for a minimum of 10 hours (including approximately 1 hour of Internal Internship Programming) per week. Specific hour-to-academic credit ratios will be agreed upon between the internโ€™s university and the APA hiring team.

Expected Learning Objectives & Professional Advancement Opportunities:

  • Learn how APA operates as an association to promote psychological sciences in PK-12 education.
  • Contribute to various research and project initiatives (often with a particular focus on translating academic science into resources strategically designed to support PK-12 school systems).
  • Gain professional development and networking experience via exposure to academic and professional communities.
  • Hone skills in various domains including organization and collaboration.
  • Foster the ability to communicate complex ideas to various audiences.
  • Take ownership of specific projects, gaining hands-on experience in project management.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a masterโ€™s or doctoral program in psychology, education, or a related field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively to meet the needs of staff, members, and constituent groups.
  • Interest in the integration of psychological science into educational settings.
  • Excellent planning, organization, time management, and project management skills, including the ability to engage in research activities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and/or basic statistical analysis packages.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • We are currently only accepting applications only for interns who are (1) in graduate school [Masterโ€™s or PhD], (2) able to receive academic credit from their school for their internship; (3) able to commit to a full year [September 2026-May 2027]; and (4) living/working in an APA-approved state (Internships at APA).
  • Enrollment at an APA Internal Internship Program academic partner institution (Howard University, Montclair State University, or University of Virginia) is required.
