Assistant Controller (Remote)
Help Build the Future of a Rapidly Growing Home Services Platform
Columbia Home Services (CHS) is a private equity-backed platform investing in and partnering with best-in-class residential HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other skilled trade service companies across the United States. As we continue to grow through acquisition and operational excellence, we're looking for an experienced Assistant Controller to help strengthen our finance organization and scale our accounting operations.
This is more than a traditional accounting role-it's an opportunity to make a significant impact within a high-growth organization. You'll work directly with executive leadership, including the Corporate Controller and CFO, helping standardize processes, improve financial reporting, integrate newly acquired businesses, and build the financial infrastructure that supports our continued expansion.
If you're someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys solving complex accounting challenges, and wants to grow your career alongside a rapidly expanding organization, we'd love to hear from you.
This is a full-time remote position.
Position Summary
Reporting directly to the Corporate Controller, the Assistant Controller will oversee the accounting and financial reporting for the corporate business unit and a portfolio of 4-6 operating companies. This role partners closely with General Managers, operating company leadership, and the corporate finance team to ensure accurate financial reporting, efficient accounting processes, and strong internal controls across the platform.
The ideal candidate combines technical accounting expertise with strong analytical skills, process improvement experience, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, acquisition-driven environment.
What You'll Do
Financial Reporting & Accounting
  • Own the accounting and financial reporting for the corporate business unit and a portfolio of 4-6 operating companies.
  • Prepare and review month-end journal entries, financial statements, account reconciliations, and variance analyses.
  • Ensure timely and accurate month-end close processes across assigned entities.
  • Maintain compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Process Improvement & Internal Controls
  • Standardize month-end close procedures across the platform to support a scalable shared-services accounting model.
  • Develop and implement consistent accounting procedures for:
    • Intercompany transactions
    • Payroll accounting
    • Prepaid expenses
    • Revenue recognition
    • Daily cash and deposit processing
  • Establish, document, and strengthen internal controls while identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce risk.
  • Support the development and implementation of company-wide accounting policies and procedures.
Audit & Compliance
  • Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation for annual financial statement audits.
  • Respond to auditor requests and coordinate required deliverables across multiple operating companies.
  • Manage annual insurance renewals and serve as the primary contact for insurance audits.
Operational Support
  • Partner with operating company leaders to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance.
  • Support company-wide Accounts Payable initiatives and help maximize automation tools and workflows.
  • Assist with accounting integrations for newly acquired businesses.
  • Complete special projects and financial initiatives as assigned by executive leadership.
  • Travel occasionally to operating company locations as needed.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience with a strong understanding of GAAP.
  • 2+ years of experience as an Assistant Controller or Senior Accountant in a private equity-backed, multi-entity, or high-growth organization.
  • Experience preparing financial statements, account reconciliations, and month-end close.
  • Strong knowledge of internal controls and financial reporting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including:
    • Pivot Tables
    • VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP
    • IF statements
    • Logical formulas
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Experience using accounting software such as Sage Intacct and QuickBooks.
  • Experience utilizing AI tools to improve productivity, automate tasks, and drive operational efficiencies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA or CMA certification.
  • Experience with ServiceTitan.
  • Experience supporting acquisitions or post-acquisition accounting integrations.
  • Experience working in a shared services or multi-entity accounting environment.
What Makes You Successful
We're looking for someone who:
  • Has a strong desire to grow into larger leadership responsibilities.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • Is highly analytical, detail-oriented, and naturally curious.
  • Enjoys improving processes and building scalable systems.
  • Can effectively prioritize multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
  • Communicates confidently with executives, operating company leaders, and cross-functional teams.
  • Works independently while collaborating effectively across departments.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment, professionalism, integrity, and accountability.
  • Brings a positive attitude and a solutions-oriented mindset to every challenge.
Why Join Columbia Home Services?
  • 100% Remote Position
  • Competitive salary with bonus opportunities.
  • Opportunity to work directly with executive leadership, including the CFO and Corporate Controller.
  • Be part of a rapidly growing private equity-backed organization.
