Remote Insurance Accounting information

How does working remotely in insurance accounting impact collaboration with other departments?

In a remote insurance accounting role, collaboration is typically managed through digital communication tools like email, video calls, and project management platforms. While you may not have face-to-face interactions, you’ll regularly coordinate with underwriting, claims, and finance teams to ensure accurate reporting and compliance. It's important to be proactive in communicating and clarifying requirements, as remote work can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or delays. Building strong virtual relationships and maintaining organized documentation will help you stay connected and effective across departments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Insurance Accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Insurance Accountant, you need strong knowledge of accounting principles, insurance industry regulations, and a relevant degree or certification such as CPA or CMA. Familiarity with accounting software (like QuickBooks or SAP), insurance management systems, and data analysis tools is essential. Attention to detail, effective communication, and self-motivation are vital soft skills for managing tasks independently and collaborating virtually. These skills ensure accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and efficient remote workflow in the insurance sector.

What is remote insurance accounting?

Remote insurance accounting refers to performing accounting duties for insurance companies or agencies from a remote location, rather than in a traditional office setting. These professionals handle tasks such as bookkeeping, preparing financial statements, managing claims payments, reconciling accounts, and ensuring compliance with industry regulations. Remote insurance accountants often use specialized software and secure communication tools to collaborate with their teams and clients. This role offers flexibility and can be ideal for those with experience in both accounting and insurance.

Job description

Description

Make an Impact Behind the Scenes at MCHC Health Centers

At MCHC Health Centers, we're committed to delivering high-quality, compassionate care across our communities. Behind that care is a strong financial foundation and a team dedicated to ensuring accuracy, compliance, and sustainability.

We're seeking a Senior Accountant who brings both technical expertise and analytical insight to support complex financial operations across multiple health centers. If you have a background in healthcare accounting and enjoy working with data, systems, and process improvement, this is a meaningful opportunity to make an impact.

About the Role

As a Senior Accountant, you'll partner closely with the CFO and Controller to support budgeting, regulatory reporting, and financial analysis. This role plays a key part in strengthening financial processes, ensuring reporting accuracy, and supporting compliance across a multi-entity healthcare environment.

This opportunity is well-suited for a seasoned accounting professional with a strong foundation in healthcare finance, particularly within Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) environments.

What You'll Do

Financial Planning & Reporting

  • Support the development and review of annual operating and capital budgets across multiple sites
  • Analyze financial trends and historical data to support planning and decision-making
  • Assist with preparation and validation of key financial reports, including the annual financial audit and Forms 990, 571-L, and Welfare Form Filings

Regulatory & Grant Reporting

  • Contribute to DHCS PPS Reconciliation Requests and Change in Scope of Service Requests (CSOSR), including variance analysis
  • Support annual Medicare Cost Report, UDS, and HCAI (OSHPD) financial reporting to ensure timely and accurate submission
  • Assist with financial components of grant reporting, including Service Area Competition and continuation reports

Analysis & Systems

  • Analyze financial and practice management system data to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Investigate discrepancies and recommend improvements to reporting processes
  • Utilize advanced Excel skills to manage, analyze, and present financial data

Process Improvement & Team Support

  • Help standardize and document financial processes across multiple entities
  • Support cross-training efforts and development of training materials and staff
  • Serve as backup for monthly close and reconciliation processes

What Will Make You Successful

  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects and competing deadlines with confidence
  • Work independently while proactively seeking clarification to keep projects moving forward
  • Build strong working relationships across departments and effectively support and guide junior staff
  • Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, catching even minor discrepancies in financial data and reports
  • Bring advanced Excel expertise, including lookups, pivot tables, and index/match, with the ability to troubleshoot and optimize complex workbooks
  • Feel comfortable working with large, complex datasets and breaking them down for meaningful analysis
  • Create clean, user-friendly, and presentation-ready workbooks that support leadership decision-making

We Offer a Cadillac Benefits Package

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • Paid Time off (PTO) and 9 Paid Holidays
  • Life Insurance
  • 401(k) with up to 4% Employer Match
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

Why This Role Matters

This is more than an accounting role, it is an opportunity to influence how a mission-driven healthcare organization allocates resources, meets regulatory demands, and sustains growth. Your work will directly support MCHC's ability to expand access to care and serve our communities with excellence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or a related field; or 5+years of relevant accounting experience
  • Experience supporting Medicare/Medicaid cost reports, HCAI (OSHPD), UDS, grant reporting, or other government financial reporting
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced functions for analysis and reporting
  • Experience in healthcare accounting, with familiarity in regulatory reporting
  • Experience working with multiple entities and segments
  • Experience in developing and working with junior accounting staff

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) environment is strongly preferred
  • Experience with Abila MIP or similar accounting systems
  • Experience with Paylocity or similar payroll systems and associated reports
  • Familiarity with healthcare systems such as OCHIN Epic, NextGen, or eClinicalWorks
