What is a remote HR professional?

A Remote HR professional is a human resources specialist who performs their duties from a location outside of the traditional office setting, often from home or another remote location. Their responsibilities include recruiting, onboarding, managing employee relations, handling payroll, and ensuring compliance with labor laws, all through digital tools and virtual communication. Remote HR roles require strong communication and organizational skills, as well as proficiency with HR software and remote collaboration platforms. These professionals play a crucial role in supporting distributed teams and maintaining company culture in a virtual environment.

How does a remote HR professional effectively support employees and maintain engagement across dispersed teams?

Remote HR professionals play a key role in fostering communication and engagement among employees who may be working from various locations. They often leverage digital tools to conduct onboarding, facilitate virtual training, and manage regular check-ins. Building trust and a sense of inclusion is essential, so remote HR specialists frequently organize virtual team-building activities and ensure open channels for feedback. Collaboration with managers and team leads is also crucial to address workplace concerns promptly and support employee well-being.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote HR professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote HR Professional, you need a solid understanding of HR policies, recruitment, compliance, and employee relations, typically supported by a degree in HR or a related field. Familiarity with HR information systems (HRIS), applicant tracking systems, and virtual collaboration tools is essential. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and organizational skills help you build trust and manage tasks effectively in a remote environment. These abilities are crucial for supporting employees, ensuring compliance, and maintaining productivity across distributed teams.

At Advocate Health, we're committed to helping people live well by delivering exceptional care with compassion, innovation, and expertise. We're seeking a Workday Systems Analyst - Onboarding to join our team and help support, optimize, and advance the digital systems that enable our HR and workforce operations.

As a valued member of our People and Culture technology team, you'll play an important role in maintaining and improving Workday solutions that support the teammate experience across the organization. This role is ideal for someone who brings strong Workday configuration experience, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to translate HR and business needs into scalable, reliable system solutions.

About This Opportunity

The Workday Systems Analyst - Onboarding independently supports and leads the configuration, maintenance, and optimization of assigned Workday modules. This role partners closely with HR, IT, and business stakeholders to understand business requirements and deliver thoughtful system configurations aligned with governance, enterprise standards, security, and best practices.

In this role, you'll support moderately complex initiatives, contribute to process design, and help ensure Workday solutions are reliable, secure, and designed with the teammate experience in mind. You'll also have the opportunity to evaluate emerging digital and AI-enabled capabilities that can improve HR service delivery, workforce insights, and operational effectiveness.

What You'll Do
  • Serve as the primary systems lead and subject matter expert for the new hire experience, partnering across Talent Acquisition, HR Shared Services, IT, and People & Culture teams to design, configure, optimize, and scale the end-to-end preboarding and onboarding journey from offer acceptance through Day 30.
  • Configure, maintain, and optimize assigned Workday modules to support end-to-end HR processes.
  • Partner with HR, IT, and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into system solutions.
  • Lead moderately complex initiatives and independently manage assigned work, priorities, and deliverables.
  • Support Workday configurations across areas such as Business Process Framework, security, eligibility rules, notifications, reporting, and dashboards.
  • Build and maintain advanced Workday reports, including calculated fields, dashboards, and data analysis.
  • Support process design and recommend scalable solutions that align with enterprise governance and best practices.
  • Lead end-to-end delivery of complex, cross-functional system solutions in partnership with HR and IT.
  • Ensure solutions adhere to architectural, security, privacy, compliance, and governance standards for sustainability and scalability.
  • Participate in release management, testing, data audits, and ongoing system maintenance.
  • Evaluate digital and AI-enabled solutions by assessing readiness, data integrity, integration capability, and operational viability.
  • Help improve teammate and manager experiences by designing simple, clear, and consistent HR system interactions.
  • Apply strong knowledge of employee lifecycle processes, including hire, movement, compensation, absence, and separation.
  • Support workforce data accuracy, consistency, and governance to enable reporting, compliance, and decision-making.
  • Independently explore, evaluate, and apply digital capabilities across varied domains and systems.
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 2-4 years of Workday or HRIS experience.
  • Workday configuration experience across modules, including Business Process Framework, security, eligibility rules, and notifications.
  • Advanced Workday reporting knowledge, including calculated fields, dashboards, and data analysis.
  • Foundational knowledge of integrations, EIBs, and data audits, with awareness of broader system impacts.
  • Understanding of release management, testing standards, and system governance best practices.
  • Ability to translate stakeholder needs into system designs while helping HR partners understand trade-offs, constraints, and implications.
  • Strong understanding of employee lifecycle processes and how they connect to HR systems.
  • Ability to balance system capability, people experience, operational feasibility, and enterprise standards.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and commitment to data accuracy, confidentiality, and data governance.
  • Awareness of emerging technologies and how they can support HR systems, workforce operations, AI adoption, and enterprise scalability.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills with the ability to partner effectively across HR, IT, and business teams.
Preferred
  • Workday Pro Certification or progress toward certification.
  • Experience supporting Workday solutions in a large, complex, matrixed organization.
  • Experience supporting onboarding, preboarding, talent acquisition, or employee lifecycle processes within Workday.
  • Experience partnering cross-functionally with HR, IT, business leaders, and operational teams.
  • Familiarity with digital transformation, automation, AI-enabled tools, or workforce technology optimization.
  • Experience supporting workforce data governance, HR reporting, and enterprise-wide system improvements.
