What is a remote footwear designer?

A Remote Footwear Designer is a professional who creates and develops shoe concepts, designs, and prototypes while working from a location outside of a traditional office or studio, often from home. They use digital design tools to create sketches, technical drawings, and specifications for footwear, collaborating with teams virtually. This role often involves trend research, material selection, and communication with manufacturers and clients through online platforms. Remote Footwear Designers must be skilled in design software and have a strong understanding of fashion and footwear construction. The flexibility of remote work allows them to collaborate with companies and brands worldwide.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote footwear designer?

To thrive as a Remote Footwear Designer, you need a strong background in industrial or fashion design, proficiency in sketching, and a solid understanding of footwear construction and materials, often supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, 3D modeling tools like Rhino or SolidWorks, and digital collaboration platforms is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help designers effectively convey ideas and collaborate remotely with teams and manufacturers. These skills ensure the delivery of innovative, high-quality footwear designs that meet both aesthetic and functional requirements in a distributed work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote footwear designers, and how can they be effectively managed?

Remote footwear designers often face challenges related to communication and collaboration, especially when working with teams across different time zones. Sharing design concepts and getting feedback can be slower compared to in-person settings, making it essential to utilize collaborative design tools and maintain clear, regular communication. Establishing a structured workflow, participating in virtual meetings, and leveraging digital prototyping platforms can help bridge these gaps. Additionally, staying proactive in providing updates and seeking feedback ensures alignment with the broader design and production teams.

Job description

Tecovas was founded with the simple goal of making the world's best western boots, apparel and leather goods - and selling them at a fair price. We are a brand revolutionizing a category and welcoming first-time boot buyers and western enthusiasts alike.

Tecovas is looking for an Assistant Designer to support the Women's Footwear Design team in creating innovative, brand-right footwear. Reporting directly to the Design Director, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional partners to turn seasonal direction, market insights, and trend research into commercial product concepts that reflect the Tecovas brand.

This role is required to be based in Austin, TX. Candidates must either be currently located in or willing to relocate to Austin, TX.

What you'll do:

  • Support the design team in translating seasonal direction and market research into new and relevant concepts.
  • Assist in developing upper designs, outsoles, trims, and embellishments that align with Tecovas' brand DNA.
  • Create detailed sketches, CADs, and tech packs using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and PLM systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure all design details are clearly communicated.
  • Support design team in preparation of all design and prototype reviews; making sure to take accurate notes and help with design updates and sample corrections.
  • Partner with Product Development to ensure all footwear samples are accurate upon arrival and help make any necessary callouts.
  • Participate in fittings to ensure integrity of designs while delivering out-of-the box comfort.
  • Maintain and contribute to a digital asset library with swatches, components, templates, and more.
  • Organize inspiration, samples, and prototypes to support the design process.
  • Travel internationally and attend tradeshows and events as needed.

Experience we're looking for:

  • Bachelor's degree in Footwear Design, Industrial Design, or equivalent design experience.
  • 1+ years of relevant experience in women's footwear design or designer capacity
  • Proficiency in creating CADs, technical drawings, and tech packs
  • Familiarity with PLM systems a plus
  • Bonus points for experience in leather goods and an understanding of Western lifestyle or culture

What you bring to the table:

  • You are passionate about product design and craftsmanship - especially leather and footwear.
  • You are detail oriented, organized, and resourceful.
  • You can manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality work on time.
  • You have excellent communication skills and the ability to clearly present your ideas.

Full Time Benefits & Perks:

  • We offer insurance plans that pay 79-90% of your health premium coverage and 100% of your dental & vision insurance coverage for your family/dependents
  • 401(k) match
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Flexible PTO policy
  • Corporate wellness program
  • Competitive salary - $65,000-70,000/annum (commensurate with experience)
  • Eligibility to participate in Corporate Bonus Program
  • Generous employee discounts!
