What is the difference between Remote Flight Test Instrumentation vs Flight Test Engineer?

AspectRemote Flight Test InstrumentationFlight Test Engineer
CredentialsTechnical certifications in instrumentation, electronics, or aerospaceEngineering degree, often in aerospace or mechanical engineering
Work EnvironmentField testing, lab setups, and remote data collectionDesign, planning, and analysis in labs or on-site test flights
Industry UsageUsed across aerospace companies for data acquisition during flight testsInvolved in overall test planning, execution, and evaluation

Remote Flight Test Instrumentation focuses on setting up and managing data collection systems during flight tests, often working remotely or in the field. Flight Test Engineers oversee the entire testing process, including planning, execution, and analysis. While both roles require technical knowledge of aerospace systems, Remote Flight Test Instrumentation emphasizes instrumentation and data acquisition, whereas Flight Test Engineers handle broader test operations and evaluations.

The Aerospace Engineer (Journeyman) provides engineering support in the application of aeronautical and aerospace engineering principles to operational test and evaluation (OT&E) of fighter aircraft systems under the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center (AFOTEC) Detachment 6 Fighter Test Services contract.

Supports evaluation of aircraft performance, system integration, and mission effectiveness in operational environments. Performs engineering analyses of air vehicle systems and subsystems, contributing to test planning, execution, and post-test analysis across live flight testing, distributed test environments, and the Joint Simulation Environment (JSE).

Works independently on assigned tasks and contributes to multidisciplinary teams to ensure engineering rigor and mission relevance in support of AFOTEC evaluation objectives.

Roles/Responsibilities:

  • Apply aerospace engineering principles to support analysis of aircraft performance, system integration, and mission effectiveness
  • Analyze flight test data, telemetry, and system outputs to assess aircraft performance and identify trends or anomalies
  • Support development and execution of operational test plans, including test objectives, scenarios, and evaluation criteria
  • Evaluate performance of aircraft subsystems, including avionics, propulsion, weapons systems, sensors, and communications systems
  • Support modeling and simulation (M&S) activities, including data preparation, model execution, and correlation with test results
  • Conduct engineering analyses and trade studies to support system evaluation and decision-making
  • Assist in identifying technical risks, performance issues, and system limitations, and support development of mitigation strategies
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including operations research analysts, test engineers, intelligence analysts, and program management personnel
  • Support mission planning and execution for test events, including pre-mission preparation and post-mission analysis
  • Develop technical documentation, including engineering assessments, test reports, and data summaries
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and traceability of engineering data and analysis products
  • Comply with applicable engineering standards, safety requirements, and security protocols

Required Skills and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • 3 or more years of relevant professional experience in aerospace engineering, flight test, aircraft systems analysis, or related technical fields
  • Experience supporting operational test and evaluation (OT&E) activities within AFOTEC or similar test organizations
  • Familiarity with fighter aircraft systems (e.g., F-35, F-16, F-15) and air combat operations
  • Experience with Joint Simulation Environment (JSE) or other modeling and simulation environments
  • Experience with flight test processes, instrumentation, or data analysis
  • Familiarity with the following tools and technologies: engineering analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink, or equivalent); data analysis tools and programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB); modeling and simulation environments and tools; data visualization and reporting tools
