Job description

Art Curator & Artist Scout (contract / paid internship)

“Kawaii” (Japanese for cute) is now the #1 subculture for women globally. Blind boxes. Claw machines. Gashapon machines. But most importantly... never-ending cuteness.

Founded by a former TikTok executive, Utopic aspires to be the next big name in kawaii culture. By building a live service mobile game and portfolio of collectible toys, we aim to popularize a new generation of cute characters for kawaii fans around the world.

We are looking for an art curator and talent scout with elevated taste to help identify emerging art talent and build a portfolio of cute character designs. This is a remote contract role (1 month with the possibility of extension). Join us to create a cultural phenomenon.

What you’ll do:

  • Scout for artists, illustrators, and designers on social media, art portfolio websites, university programs, art fairs and exhibitions
  • Assess portfolios for style fit, technical execution, and production readiness
  • Maintain ongoing talent pipeline and conduct artist outreach, pitches, vetting, and negotiation
  • Exercise curatorial instincts and create character design briefs for art talent
  • Support the management of artist relationships at scale and coordinate project timelines to ensure timely delivery

What you’ll bring:

  • 1-3 years of job experience (university students are welcome to apply)
  • Art history, fine arts, illustration degrees preferred
  • Background in art curation recommended but not necessary
  • Strong curatorial taste as demonstrated by Pinterest boards, art portfolios and other supporting materials
  • Ability to articulate what makes design work elevated, distinctive, and effective
  • Familiarity with art toys, collectibles, kawaii culture and cozy games preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and project management skills required

Pay range:

The monthly pay range for this position is between $3,500-$6,000 USD for US-based candidates, £2,000–£4,000 GBP for UK-based candidates. This range is indicative of projected hiring range, however annual base salary will be determined based on a candidate’s work location, skills and experience. Candidates outside of the US and UK are welcome to apply.
