Role description:

Arcadis is seeking an experienced Civil / Environmental Engineer to join our Design Engineering team. This is a remote flexible opportunity. The candidate selected for this role can be based out of any Arcadis office in the Western US with an expectation of full-time office or hybrid home-office working.

As a Principal Civil / Environmental Engineer, you will support a growing base of complex mining, reclamation, restoration, and development projects throughout North America, engage directly with our clients and the regulatory community, and serve as a mentor to junior staff. Engineering activities will include providing technical leadership at all levels of project delivery from conceptual planning through design and into construction. 

Work activities will include a mix of design analysis, calculation preparation and review, technical advisory roles, report writing, construction support, cost estimation, value engineering analysis, and leading teams of engineers in project delivery. Projects typically include large-scale earth moving and regrading, engineered containment such as caps and covers and waste repositories, stormwater management facilities, environmental remediation such as waste excavation, roads, land development, and stream and wetland restoration.

The role is primarily office-based with expected project-related travel (e.g., site visits, client engagement, regulatory meetings) up to 20% depending on project and client expectations.

Role accountabilities:

  • Working with project managers and other senior technical team members, develop concept-level plans to address client needs
  • Leading and managing teams of junior engineers throughout the entire project lifecycle (e.g. conceptual design, final design, construction, O&M)
  • Review regulations and standards to effectively plan technical studies, project designs, and required permitting activities
  • Analyze documentation including technical reports, maps, drawings, test results, and aerial photographs to understand site characteristics to support civil design development
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and develop stormwater management designs
  • Utilize 3D design software (e.g., Autodesk Civil3D or similar) to develop grading and drainage plans, optimize earthwork designs, and perform quantity calculations
  • Design stormwater best management practices (e.g., infiltration basins, bioretention areas, filters) in accordance with agency requirements
  • Prepare and oversee development of design documentation including drawings and technical specifications (with ability to directly assist as required)
  • Provide senior review of engineering calculation briefs, design reports, design drawings, technical specifications, and permitting submittals
  • Provide office-based construction support, including providing contractor assistance (e.g., responding to RFIs), technical submittal review, and implementing real-time design changes based on conditions encountered in the field
  • Present on technical and engineering topics to clients and regulatory agencies
  • Work with senior staff in client development activities, including proposal writing, estimating project costs, client presentations, and periodically attending industry professional conferences
  • Mentor and delegate to junior team members

Qualifications & Experience:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
  • Minimum 10 years of experience (15 or more preferred)
  • Prior experience supporting mining projects
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) with ability to obtain reciprocity in western states
  • Proficiency with civil design using computer-based modeling applications (i.e., AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar)
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office products

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting other market sectors such as oil and gas, landfills, transportation, or power and water utilities
  • Proficiency with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software (e.g., HydroCAD, WinTR-55, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM, or similar)
  • Experience with mine permitting requirements and federal environmental regulations (e.g. CERCLA)
  • Prior experience as an Engineer of Record

Actual salaries will vary and are based on several factors, such as experience, education, budget, internal equity, project and location.
