Job description

TransCore (TRN), a subsidiary of ST Engineering, is seeking an experienced and innovative Senior Technical Writer to join our Software Development team. This position will be based in Nashville, TN or Houston, TX. Remote applicants with the right blend of skills and experience will also be considered.

Overview

With 80 years of experience as a leader in the tolling industry, TransCore continues to shape the future of transportation through innovative hardware and software solutions. We are seeking an experienced Senior Technical Writer to develop clear, accurate, and maintainable documentation supporting complex systems, operational workflows, and customer deployments.
Technical Writers at TransCore are part of a growing centralized documentation organization focused on building scalable documentation practices, aligned standards, reusable content strategies, and modern documentation workflows across product and project teams. Writers are expected to independently own their assigned documentation initiatives while collaborating closely with engineering, project management, support teams, SMEs, and documentation leadership throughout the product and project lifecycle.
This role supports Agile Scrum teams and operational stakeholders by delivering documentation aligned with release readiness, deployment execution, operational support, troubleshooting effectiveness, and customer enablement. Documentation responsibilities may include customer-facing guides, installation and configuration procedures, deployment documentation, internal troubleshooting materials, operational runbooks, workflow documentation, and reusable documentation assets.
Technical Writers are expected to contribute in modern documentation environments that utilize Azure DevOps, Markdown-based documentation workflows, Git-based repositories, Jira, Confluence, SharePoint, collaborative review processes, and AI-assisted documentation workflows.
We intend the Technical Writers to join our team in Houston, TX, Nashville, TN, or remotely for highly qualified candidates. This is a daytime position with potential hybrid work arrangements for employees in Houston or Nashville. Occasional travel (less than 15% annually) to other locations may be required based on technical or project needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Research, write, validate, maintain, and continuously improve end-to-end system-level and product documentation
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including product documentation and end-user guidance for internal and external stakeholders, Installation and configuration procedures, deployment and operational readiness documentation, and internal troubleshooting and support documentation.
  • Align documentation deliverables with release readiness milestones, deployment timelines, and operational needs.
  • Collaborate with Agile Scrum teams, engineers, project stakeholders, support personnel, and SMEs throughout the documentation lifecycle.
  • Independently own assigned documentation initiatives and proactively drive documentation progress with minimal oversight.
  • Operate within established documentation standards, governance practices, templates, taxonomy structures, and tooling strategies.
  • Contribute recommendations to improve documentation workflows, reusable content strategies, review processes, automation opportunities, and long-term maintainability.
  • Participate in collaborative review and validation processes to ensure documentation accuracy, consistency, usability, and operational effectiveness.
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of assigned systems, products, workflows, and how they integrate into broader TransCore solutions.
  • Support scalable documentation operations through effective content organization, reusable documentation practices, and alignment with documentation lifecycle processes.
  • Demonstrate strong grammar, editing, formatting, communication, and information organization skills.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 10-13 years of relevant technical documentation experience.
  • Experience documenting complex hardware and software systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within cross-functional teams.
  • Experience researching, organizing, validating, and presenting technical information.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, technologies, and project timelines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Portfolio demonstrating the ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts to multiple audiences or completion of a writing assignment to be given during the interview process.
  • Willing and able to travel occasionally for business needs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working within modern AI-assisted documentation workflows and content generation processes.
  • Experience with Markdown-based documentation workflows and Git-based version control practices.
  • Experience using Azure DevOps, Jira, Confluence, SharePoint, Visio, Mintlify, or similar collaboration and documentation platforms.
  • Familiarity with documentation-as-code environments and structured content reuse strategies.
