Remote Emergency Room Coder information

What is a remote emergency room coder?

A Remote Emergency Room Coder is a medical coding professional who reviews and assigns appropriate codes to emergency room (ER) patient records for billing and insurance purposes. They work remotely, ensuring accuracy in coding diagnoses, procedures, and treatments based on clinical documentation. This role requires knowledge of coding systems such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS, as well as familiarity with ER-specific cases. Accuracy and compliance with healthcare regulations are essential to ensure proper reimbursement and minimize claim denials.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote emergency room coder?

To thrive as a Remote Emergency Room Coder, you need a strong understanding of medical coding guidelines, emergency medicine terminology, and compliance standards, typically supported by a coding certification such as CCS, CPC, or RHIT. Proficiency in coding software (such as 3M or Optum), electronic health records (EHRs), and familiarity with ICD-10 and CPT coding systems is essential. Excellent attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and effective written communication are standout soft skills for this position. These skills ensure accurate coding, timely billing processes, and clear collaboration with healthcare providers, which are crucial for both patient care and hospital reimbursement.

What are the typical challenges faced by remote emergency room coders, and how can they be managed?

Remote Emergency Room Coders often encounter challenges such as interpreting incomplete or complex medical records and staying updated with frequent coding guideline changes. Managing these challenges involves excellent attention to detail, continuous professional education, and close communication with onsite medical staff when clarification is needed. Working remotely also requires strong self-motivation, time management, and the ability to work independently without direct supervision. Leveraging company-provided resources like training sessions and team collaboration tools can help coders stay efficient and accurate in their work.

Job description

From the outside, video conferencing looks solved. Anyone who's worked on it knows better. At a big company, that work gets split a hundred ways, and you'd own a slice of it. At a company our size, it's one person's call, and it would be yours.

We're around 55 people, headquartered in Copenhagen, and you'd work from there or remotely from within the EU. We build the hardware and the software that runs on it, so the conferencing you'd work on runs on the device in the meeting room.

Year one outcomes
  • Put the telemetry in. Conferencing quality is hard to see without the right instrumentation, so you'd build it: latency, quality, and resource use on the device, visible and tracked. Once it's there, a bad call comes with the data to explain it.
  • Move the metrics. Better audio and video, lower latency, lighter load on the device. Agree on the handful that matter most, and show clear movement within the year.
  • Take on the problems that need a specialist. Some conferencing issues need someone who's solved them before. You'd own those from diagnosis to fix, and the recurring ones stop recurring.
  • Raise the team's game. Share what you know so the team's calls on real-time media get sharper, and flag the wrong turns before they cost months. The bar you set becomes the team's default.
Who You Are
  • You've lived in real-time media. Years of it: WebRTC, codecs, the media server and its tricks, why a call holds together on one network and falls apart on another. You know the caveats because you've hit them. And the brand names sit on the same ideas underneath, so where you learned it matters less to us than that you did.

  • You reach for data. When something's off, you measure before you theorise. You've built or leaned on telemetry to find what's going on in a messy real-time system.

  • You lift the people around you. You do it without needing a manager's title. You flag the caveat before someone hits it, steer a design away from a wrong turn, and people trust your read on a hard call.

  • You use AI as a daily tool. You write code with it, debug with it, prototype with it. You've formed your own view on where it speeds things up and where it gets in the way, and you help the people around you do the same.

Logistics
Location: Remote in Europe, or hybrid from our Copenhagen office.

Why Airtame:

  • A harder problem than a cloud shop's. Our real-time media has to hold up across a spread of devices in meeting rooms, on networks we don't control. Different constraints than a uniform server fleet, and more of them.
  • Room to set the bar. You'd be the first deep specialist Airtame's had on conferencing quality, so how it's measured and judged is still open for you to shape.
  • A healthy work-life balance.
  • Significant responsibility and ownership over projects and your field of expertise.
  • Five weeks paid vacation and 5 days of extra paid AirtameFlex days.
  • Flexible work environment, with a hybrid mindset.
  • Pension and private health insurance (on FTE Copenhagen contract).

Airtame is an equal opportunity employer. We have colleagues across the globe, with both in-office and full-time remote workers. This feeds into our international hybrid mindset, with people from 25+ nationalities that make up the Airtame team.
