BioInsight is Illumina's newest business unit, purpose-built to deliver deeper biological insights from large-scale multiomic data. By uniting Illumina's world-class sequencing capabilities, enterprise-ready software, and AI innovation - including data assets such as the Alliance for Genomic Discovery and Illumina Billion Cell Atlas - BioInsight works collaboratively with pharma and biotech partners to accelerate multiomics and AI driven drug discovery. As the industry shifts towards genetics and AI-first drug discovery, BioInsight is building the partnerships that translate multiomic insight into therapeutic impact.

Summary

Illumina is seeking a candidate for an Associate Director, Business Development role within the BioInsight Business Unit. The candidate should have experience originating, structuring, and closing strategic partnerships with pharma and biotech companies and have established relationships to drive deal funnel activity.

This role requires scientific fluency across the drug discovery continuum and the commercial acumen to translate such into partnerships that create durable value for all parties.

The role spans the full deal lifecycle, from partnership conception through contract execution, and involves close collaboration with Illumina's multidisciplinary R&D team of experimental, computational, and AI/ML scientists

Responsibilities:

  • Source and advance a pipeline of strategic partnerships across target discovery, clinical and population genomics, data licensing, software/bioinformatics, and multiomics applications
  • Lead end-to-end deal execution: opportunity scoping, term sheet development, negotiation, and close
  • Build and maintain senior relationships across functions within pharma and biotech partner organizations
  • Develop and refine the strategic roadmap for Illumina's genomics and target discovery services using large-scale human genetics and genomics datasets
  • Interface closely with Illumina's multidisciplinary R&D team of experimental and computational scientists to align business strategy with scientific advancements

Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 15 years of related experience, with 7+ years of Management experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in business development including revenue growth performance
  • Demonstrated deal track record - candidates must be prepared to discuss specific transactions, their role, and clear outcomes
  • BA/BS in Genomics, Molecular Biology, or a related life sciences field
  • Familiarity with how genomic and functional datasets are applied across early discovery, target validation, translational research, and clinical development
  • Established network within pharma and/or biotech
  • Ability to influence across the organization at all levels
  • Ability to work remotely
  • Willingness to travel up to 30%

Preferred:

  • MBA OR PhD in Genetics, Molecular Biology, or a related life sciences field
  • Prior technology licensing, data partnership or hospital/biobank collaboration experience
  • Therapeutic area depth in one or more of: 1) oncology, 2) cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic (CVRM) diseases, 3) neuroscience
  • Experience in one or more of the following in a research, commercial or business development context: population genomics, real-world evidence, functional genomics
  • Previous experience managing individual contributors

The estimated base salary range for the Associate Director, Business Development, BioInsight - AI, Multiomics & Drug Discovery role based in the United States of America is: $170,600 - $255,800. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. The range reflects longterm growth in the role; therefore, most candidates are hired between the minimum and middle of the range. Placement depends on experience, skills, location, and internal equity. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
