What is a remote database developer?

A Remote Database Developer is a technology professional who designs, creates, and maintains database systems while working from a remote location, rather than in a traditional office setting. Their responsibilities include developing database structures, optimizing queries, ensuring data integrity, and implementing security measures. They often collaborate with software developers and IT teams to ensure databases are efficient and meet organizational requirements. Remote work allows them to perform these tasks using cloud-based tools and secure connections, providing flexibility for both employers and employees.

What does a remote database developer do?

A database developer or programmer creates and implements computer databases that store and maintain an entity’s data information. You work with clients to identify the best database management software and test the application or program for performance and efficiency. Your responsibilities include designing information systems to meet the needs of the client, testing product performance, performing data analysis, and developing documentation from your analysis. In some cases, you may also train or teach other developers or client teams. As a remote developer, you may complete your duties on your own or as part of a remote team for a corporate client or employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote database developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Database Developer, you need strong expertise in database design, SQL programming, and data modeling, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with database management systems like MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Microsoft SQL Server, and certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, are highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills help you collaborate effectively and deliver solutions in a remote environment. These skills ensure secure, efficient, and reliable database solutions that meet organizational needs while supporting independent work and remote teamwork.

What are some common challenges faced by remote database developers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote database developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with distributed teams, managing secure access to sensitive data, and troubleshooting issues without on-site support. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication channels, use secure VPNs and authentication protocols, and leverage collaborative tools like version control and ticketing systems. Regular check-ins and thorough documentation also help ensure everyone stays aligned and project progress remains smooth.

We're looking for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, collaborating with stakeholders, and turning data into actionable insights. If you're passionate about data architecture, business intelligence, and helping others leverage data more effectively, this could be a great opportunity to grow your career while influencing decisions across a dynamic retail organization.
This position is open to remote candidates within the continental United States.
What You'll Be Doing
Lead Enterprise BI Solutions
  • Design, develop, and maintain Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) metadata objects, including schemas, cubes, attributes, hierarchies, metrics, prompts, filters, consolidations, and custom groups.
  • Architect and deliver certified enterprise reporting, dashboard, and decision support solutions that provide accurate and reliable data.

  • Help promote a data-driven culture by ensuring users have access to trusted and meaningful insights.

Solve Complex Technical Challenges
  • Serve as the primary technical owner for user inquiries, production support incidents, and enhancement requests.
  • Triage, prioritize, estimate, and drive work through successful resolution while balancing competing business priorities.
  • Perform root cause analysis and troubleshoot data, performance, and application issues across reporting, metadata, and platform components.

Ensure Stability and Continuous Improvement
  • Participate in production deployments, object migrations, and change management activities.
  • Contribute to an after-hours on-call rotation.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, metadata architecture artifacts, schema designs, and knowledge management resources.

What You'll Need
Required Experience & Technical Skills
  • 7+ years of experience working with BI tools (MicroStrategy/Strategy), analytics platforms, data warehouses, or cloud-based analytics environments.
  • Experience translating business requirements into scalable BI solutions using semantic layers, metrics, attributes, hierarchies, and reporting structures within enterprise BI platforms such as Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy).
  • Advanced SQL expertise, including complex query development, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and large dataset analysis within cloud data warehouse environments.
  • Experience working with cloud-based analytics ecosystems, preferably Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Experience working with relational database management systems (RDBMS) and cloud data warehouse platforms.
  • Strong understanding of tables, joins, keys, relationships, views, and data structures that support reporting and analytics solutions.
