The Opportunity: Johnson Controls has an exciting Global Product Safety Compliance Principal Engineer opportunity within the Global Products organization. We're looking for a Product Safety Principal Engineer to join the Global Engineering Excellence team within JCI's Global Products and lead Safety and Regulatory Compliance projects, regulatory evaluations and Strategic Initiatives. This individual partners closely with Johnson Controls Engineering, Quality and Legal Departments to assure our products incorporate the proper safety features and related aspects are appropriately implemented, monitored, tested and maintained.

What You Will Do

The Global Product Safety Compliance (PSC) Principal Engineer under the guidance of the Global Product Safety Compliance Director will evaluate and mitigate potential safety liability risks for the JCI product portfolio which includes chillers, heat pumps, fire suppression and protection equipment, security, controls and more. The individual will lead and conduct risk assessments as well as conduct manufacturing audits to verify safety and regulatory compliance. They will also lead process improvements to drive proactive and sustained compliance in the product line.

The Principal Engineer must have a good understanding and experience in regional and global safety standards to lead the Product Safety team. He or she will lead and advise on potential product safety issues and lead a team to determine root cause analysis, risk assessment, resolution and field communications driving these issues to completion and implementing preventative actions.

He or she will work with the product team on safety reviews of DFMEA/PFMEA/Control Plan and will ensure lessons learned (safety related field campaigns, warranty, etc.) are rolled back into NPI and manufacturing.The individual will go to GEMBA and conduct product safety audits at the manufacturing sites. They will ensure global safety standards and city, state, country or province codes are met. They must also have a good understanding of technical interpretation of safety standards and support regional branch and field code compliance questions from customers or Authorities having Jurisdiction.
How You Will Do It

  • Manage complex product safety and regulatory code risk assessments and projects based on the 8D method.
  • Serve as an expert regulatory compliance advisor and Subject Matter Expert on key strategic and critical compliance issues.
  • Provide compliance expertise and global compliance perspective in the development of risk mitigation strategies.
  • Understand product and process risk profiles, proactively identify and prioritize risks. Partner with stakeholders to escalate critical risks to the appropriate level of management.
  • Partners with leadership to provide compliance oversight and execute compliance programs to ensure compliance with all voluntary, regulatory and statutory standards.
  • Execute follow ups to audits, significant regulatory inspections, and regulatory actions. Partner with stakeholders to drive effective, sustainable action against associated action plans.
  • Maintain knowledge and application of the product safety regulations, standards, requirements and certifications that apply to Johnson Controls products.
  • Partner with other areas to identify critical areas for improvements in the product to assure continuous improvement.

What We Look For

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical or chemical engineering discipline.
  • A minimum 8+ years of extensive demonstrated experience and knowledge of Product Safety Compliance to UL, CSA, IEC, EN, etc. standards for commercial and/or industrial products. (Knowledge of UL/CSA/IEC 60335-1, 60335-2-40, 61800-5-1 is preferred).
  • Demonstrated high level Project Management, leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Demonstrated track record of achieving successful product safety compliance outcomes, remediating compliance issues, and supporting regulatory inspections.
  • Ability to interpret technical safety and regulatory requirements and work well with safety agencies and regulatory authorities.
  • Ability to build partnerships, handle complex situations, mediate issues and build consensus.
  • Travel up to 20%, typically North America based (possibly some future international travel).

Preferred

  • Demonstrated product safety risk analysis assessments.
  • Flexible and agile; able to adjust to changing circumstances and business demands
  • Skills to work well and solve field issues with Certification regulators, field inspectors, authorities having jurisdiction, etc.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to navigate in a dynamic global organization and building strong partnerships with key stakeholders across multiple multi-national geographies.
  • Knowledge of 8D, FMEA process is helpful but not required.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $126,000-$189,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience,knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with marketdata.)
