How can I make $100,000 a year working from home?

Remote Controls Engineers can reach a $100,000 annual salary by gaining specialized skills in embedded systems, automation, and programming languages like C or Python, along with relevant certifications. Building experience through complex projects, working for high-paying companies, or consulting can also increase earning potential while working remotely.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Remote Controls Engineers typically do not earn $500,000 annually; such high salaries are more common in executive or specialized roles within engineering fields. Senior engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills, or leadership positions in high-demand industries may reach high six-figure incomes, but $500,000 is rare for this role alone.

What engineers make $200,000 a year?

Senior controls engineers, including remote controls engineers, with extensive experience, specialized skills in automation and embedded systems, and often advanced certifications can earn $200,000 or more annually. High salaries are typically associated with industries like aerospace, defense, or large-scale manufacturing, especially for those in leadership or highly technical roles.

What is a Remote Controls Engineer job?

A Remote Controls Engineer designs, develops, and maintains automated control systems that can be managed remotely. They work with hardware and software to ensure seamless communication between control systems and remote operators. Their role often involves programming PLCs, optimizing communication protocols, and troubleshooting system issues. Industries such as manufacturing, robotics, and energy commonly employ Remote Controls Engineers to enhance efficiency and safety in operations.

Can Controls Engineers work remotely?

Controls Engineers can often work remotely, especially in roles focused on design, programming, and system analysis that rely on computer-based tools. However, some tasks requiring on-site installation, maintenance, or troubleshooting may necessitate physical presence. The feasibility of remote work depends on the employer, project requirements, and the engineer's skills with remote collaboration tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Controls Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Controls Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical or mechanical engineering, control systems design, and programming, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with industry-standard PLCs, SCADA systems, HMI software, and certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) or relevant manufacturer certifications are highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills are essential for collaborating across multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications are critical for designing reliable control solutions, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring project success in dynamic, technology-driven environments.

What types of projects and teams does a Remote Controls Engineer typically work with?

Remote Controls Engineers often work on projects related to the automation and remote operation of equipment in industries such as manufacturing, energy, utilities, and transportation. You’ll typically collaborate with electrical engineers, software developers, project managers, and field technicians to design, implement, and optimize control systems. Projects may involve integrating new automation solutions, upgrading legacy equipment, or troubleshooting system issues. This role often allows you to see projects through from initial design and specification all the way to commissioning and support, offering excellent opportunities for technical growth and cross-functional teamwork.

Job description

The Team:

Upstart Bank is an evolution of Upstart's AI lending platform, focused on simplifying the regulatory infrastructure behind our marketplace while expanding access to credit nationwide. By moving from a fragmented, state-based system to a unified federal framework, Upstart Bank enables more consistent borrower experiences, reduces structural costs, and unlocks opportunities to improve pricing, compliance, and access to credit at scale.

As Senior Manager, Software Engineering for Upstart Bank, you will lead one or more engineering teams responsible for a critical area of the bank platform. You will translate product, regulatory, and operational priorities into technical plans and reliable execution across systems spanning areas such as payments, funding, reporting, or integrations. You will partner closely with Product, Compliance, Legal, Risk, Finance, Operations, and senior engineering leaders to deliver scalable, reliable, and audit-ready infrastructure for a modern banking platform.

This is a rare opportunity to help build a modern bank platform from an early foundation rather than inherit a legacy core.

How you'll make an impact

  • Lead and grow one or more engineering teams responsible for a critical area of the Upstart Bank platform
  • Drive execution across complex, bank-critical systems in areas such as ledgering and funding, deposits and payments, reporting, or integrations
  • Partner with Product, Compliance, Legal, Risk, Finance, and Operations to translate business and regulatory needs into technical plans and delivered software
  • Contribute to technical direction and architecture for your area, ensuring systems support reliability, resilience, security, traceability, and auditability
  • Manage cross-functional dependencies and improve the predictability and quality of delivery across teams
  • Build engineering processes that support internal controls, audits, change management, and reliable operation in a regulated environment
  • Hire, coach, and develop engineers and emerging engineering leaders
  • Foster a culture of rigor, ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 8+ years of engineering experience, including 3+ years of engineering management experience
  • Experience leading engineering teams through complex, cross-functional platform or infrastructure initiatives
  • Strong technical background with experience contributing to architecture and technical direction for distributed systems, cloud platforms, or business-critical infrastructure
  • Experience operating in regulated, high-control, or high-reliability environments where quality, controls, auditability, and change management are critical

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building or integrating core financial infrastructure such as ledgering, payments, deposits, funding systems, reporting, or financial integrations
  • Experience in banking, fintech, payments, lending, or other regulated financial systems
  • Experience building platforms that support internal controls, audits, and reliable operation in regulated environments
  • Experience leading platform modernization, core-system launches, vendor integrations, or major infrastructure transformations
  • Experience developing senior engineers, tech leads, or emerging engineering leaders
  • Demonstrated ability to balance speed, quality, reliability, and compliance in high-stakes technical environments
  • Interest in improving access to credit through technology and scalable financial infrastructure

Position location This role is available in the following locations: Remote

Travel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions' cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.
