Overview

Principal Substation Engineer - Remote - US

We have an opportunity for a talented & ambitious electrical engineer to join us as our new Principal Substation Engineer. This position can be remote within the United States.

As our Principal Substation Engineer, you will lead the engineering effort for new and ongoing substation projects. You will support multiple projects simultaneously and work closely with NV5 Substation Engineering leadership to ensure project success. You will be working in small project teams to provide exceptional customer service and quality in deliverables to our clients.

Responsibilities

Other responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepare conceptual designs and execution plans
  • Engineering/project cost estimates and schedules
  • Perform and document quality reviews for other engineers and designers.
  • Prepare construction drawings, documents, calculations, and studies for medium and high voltage substation projects.
  • Responsible for technical delivery of power delivery engineering projects or tasks.
  • Prepare calculations, studies, and reports for substation and power systems projects meeting internal and client standards and requirements.  
  • Apply engineering design principles and practices including formulas.
  • Work and coordinate with small multi-discipline (Civil, Structural, Physical, P&C, Transmission Line) project teams to execute substation projects.
  • Responsible for providing weekly updates to Sr. team leaders on milestone progress, estimated completion dates including percent completion of activities and supporting information to monitor project progress.
Qualifications

We are seeking the following qualifications:

  • 15+ years of experience in the Substation/Power Delivery field.
  • Experience with high voltage substation design (12kV through 500kV) activities such as preparing one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, panel layouts, AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams, physical layouts, electrical elevations, plans (equipment, grounding, and raceway), and bills of materials including selection of non-standard equipment.
  • Ability to interpret and apply standards including IEEE, IEC, NESC, and client standards.
  • Strong preference for those with excellent written and verbal communication, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, great organizational skills, proactive and forward-thinking individuals.
  • Experience with power system calculations (AC station service, DC battery sizing, and Voltage Drop/Cable Selection) is a plus.
  • Experience with relay settings is a plus.
  • Knowledge of substation physical equipment is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Protection and Controls design is a must.
  • B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • PE license is a must.
