To excel in Remote Construction Accounting, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, construction industry-specific financial practices, and typically a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with construction accounting software like Sage 300, QuickBooks, or Procore, as well as proficiency in remote collaboration tools, is essential. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing multiple projects and stakeholders remotely. These competencies ensure accurate financial tracking, compliance, and seamless coordination across geographically dispersed teams.

Building strong working relationships remotely helps prevent miscommunication and ensures that financial documentation is accurate and up-to-date, supporting project success and compliance.

What is remote construction accounting?

Remote construction accounting is the management of financial records, budgeting, and reporting for construction projects, carried out from a location outside the job site or company office. Professionals in this field handle tasks such as invoicing, payroll, job costing, and tracking expenses using cloud-based software and digital communication tools. This allows construction companies to streamline their accounting processes, improve accuracy, and maintain real-time financial oversight regardless of physical location.

Job description

Construction Accounting Specialist - Sage 100 Contractor
Remote | Construction Accounting | Client-Facing
You know construction accounting. You know Sage 100 Contractor. And you take pride in getting it right.
This Construction Accounting Specialist - Sage 100 Contractor role at Syscon supports a portfolio of construction clients through hands-on accounting, payroll processing, and day-to-day construction accounting work within Sage 100 Contractor.
Important — Please Read Before Applying
  • This role requires recent, hands-on experience using Sage 100 Contractor (not Sage 50, Sage Intacct, or other Sage products).
  • You must have personally processed payroll, including payroll taxes and filings, within Sage 100 Contractor.
If you do not meet both of these requirements, this Construction Accounting Specialist role will likely not be a fit.

What You’ll Do
As a Construction Accounting Specialist, you will:
  • Manage day-to-day accounting functions in Sage 100 Contractor for a portfolio of construction clients
  • Personally process payroll within Sage 100 Contractor, including payroll taxes and filings
  • Perform bank reconciliations, sales tax filings, and month-end close
  • Support clients with routine accounting needs and system questions
  • Maintain accurate records and a clean audit trail across all client work
  • Identify and resolve issues independently when possible
  • Communicate clearly with clients and follow through on commitments
What This Role Is (and Is Not)
This role IS:
  • Hands-on accounting and payroll work
  • Managing a portfolio of clients
  • Working independently with a high level of ownership
  • Supporting real, day-to-day accounting needs
This role is NOT:
  • ERP implementations or system consulting
  • High-level accounting strategy or oversight-only roles
  • Report writing or data analytics (dedicated team handles this)
This Role Is Not a Fit For
  • Candidates without recent, hands-on Sage 100 Contractor experience
  • Candidates without direct payroll processing experience within Sage 100 Contractor
  • Those coming from corporate accounting roles without client-facing responsibility
  • Individuals who prefer highly structured environments with constant direction
  • Candidates who struggle managing multiple clients or shifting priorities
  • Those seeking ERP consulting or strategy roles instead of a hands-on accounting role.
What You Bring (Required)
  • 5+ years of Sage 100 Contractor experience (not other Sage products — non-negotiable)
  • Recent, hands-on use of Sage 100 Contractor in a production environment
  • Hands-on experience processing payroll, including taxes and filings, within Sage 100 Contractor
  • Strong construction accounting knowledge, including job costing, WIP, progress billing, and AP/AR
  • Hands-on bookkeeping experience (not just reviewing or overseeing)
  • Ability to manage multiple clients and priorities independently
  • Strong organization and follow-through
  • Comfort working in a high-autonomy environment
You should be comfortable stepping into an existing Sage 100 Contractor environment and immediately handling payroll, reconciliations, and day-to-day accounting with minimal ramp-up.
What Success Looks Like
  • Clients trust your accuracy and responsiveness
  • Deadlines are consistently met across your client portfolio
  • Books are clean, reconciled, and audit-ready
  • Payroll and filings are accurate and on time
  • Clients rely on you as their go-to for day-to-day accounting support
What Makes You Stand Out
  • Experience working across multiple construction companies (not just one)
  • Union payroll experience
  • Ability to explain accounting concepts clearly to non-accountants
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, client-driven environment
If you enjoy owning your work, managing your own clients, and being the person they rely on to keep their financials clean and on track, this role will fit well.
How We Work
  • High autonomy: you manage your own schedule and priorities
  • Strong support: leadership, IT, and business applications teams are available when needed
  • No ego, no drama: we show up, do the work, and support each other
  • Teaching mindset: we help clients improve, not just complete tasks
Compensation & Details
  • U.S. work authorization required. No sponsorship available
  • Salary: Commensurate with experience
  • Fully remote
  • Flexible schedule with accountability to deadlines
  • Clients across multiple time zones
Benefits
  • 100% employer-paid medical insurance for employees
  • SIMPLE IRA with 3% company match
  • Paid time off, with increased flexibility over time
  • Fully remote work environment
  • Supportive, team-oriented culture with strong internal resources
