Business Insurance Compliance is seeking a highly experienced professional to join the team as a Compliance Director/Assistant Director, primarily supporting the Middle & Large and Global Specialty organizations. This role operates with significant visibility to senior business leaders and is designed for a professional who can engage broadly across the enterprise, influence outcomes, and translate complex regulatory requirements into clear, strategic guidance.

The Compliance team partners closely with Business Insurance leadership to provide a wide array of legal and regulatory support, including advising on commercial product development, rate and form filings, underwriting practices, regulatory inquiries, and strategic business initiatives. In this role, the Director/Assistant Director will serve as the primary compliance advisor for assigned business units and products, regularly interfacing with senior executives and coordinating across the Law Department (e.g., Privacy, Government Relations, Enterprise Transactions, Litigation) and other enterprise stakeholders to deliver practical, risk-balanced solutions.

The Director/Assistant Director is expected to operate with a broad, enterprise perspective-anticipating and mitigating regulatory risks, shaping strategy, and providing clear, actionable insights to support informed decision-making at the leadership level.

Work Arrangement

This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates near Hartford, CT are expected to work in the office 3 days a week (Tuesday-Thursday). Remote employees may be asked to travel to an office as business needs arise.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as Compliance Lead and primary advisor for assigned business units and product lines.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to Business Insurance leaders, translating complex regulatory topics into clear, actionable guidance and executive-level recommendations.
  • Lead and influence initiatives involving multiple Business Insurance units and product lines; provide practical, business-oriented guidance to stakeholders.
  • Proactively identify emerging regulatory risks and present strategic solutions that align with business objectives and risk appetite.
  • Direct and manage regulatory matters in a manner that builds credibility with regulators and reinforces The Hartford's reputation.
  • Develop and execute compliance strategies and audit programs to identify and mitigate organizational risk.
  • Represent Compliance in leadership forums, demonstrating strong executive presence, sound judgment, and the ability to influence outcomes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in a commercial insurance regulatory environment and/or with commercial insurance products (experience with Workers' Compensation and/or other casualty lines preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience supporting and influencing senior leaders and executive stakeholders
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate complex regulatory environments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to distill complex issues for executive audiences
  • Proven ability to build relationships and operate effectively across all levels of the organization
  • Collaborative, self-motivated, resourceful, and able to balance strategic thinking with execution
  • J.D. from accredited law school preferred (but not required)

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$104,000 - 208,800

The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
