Job description
Environmental Project Manager (Engineering)
Location: Remote, U.S. or Canada
A certified B Corp, Tradewater is on a mission to bend the curve on global warming as quickly as possible, directly combating climate change by identifying, collecting, and mitigating the release of non-CO₂ superpollutants-including old refrigerants, excess halons, and methane. These actions reduce potent greenhouse gases, protect the ozone layer, and generate high-integrity carbon credits that fund and expand our mission worldwide. Our projects also create measurable social and economic value for local communities, creating long-lasting benefits that strengthen economies and improve ecosystems endangering public health.
Targeting superpollutants offers one of the fastest, most cost-effective climate strategies available today. These non-CO₂ gases drive nearly half of all human-caused warming, are exponentially more potent than CO₂, and cannot be removed from the atmosphere once released. Cutting halocarbons and methane delivers bigger and faster climate benefits than CO₂ reductions alone and leading models, from MIT to the IPCC, agree that tackling superpollutants is essential to any credible net-zero pathway.
Since 2012, Tradewater has prevented over 11 million tons of CO₂ equivalent from releasing into the atmosphere and are on path to prevent at least 30 million tons by 2030. We are committed to bending the curve on global warming as quickly as possible and delivering trusted, measurable, scalable climate impact today.
The Opportunity
To support its growth in plugging orphaned oil and gas wells, Tradewater is seeking an Environmental Project Manager (Engineering) to help fight climate change in a tangible and meaningful way. This position is key to the success of our methane work to prevent the emission of harmful greenhouse gases. This role works as a part of a team developing a pipeline of projects to identify and prevent the emission of harmful greenhouse gases.
The Environmental Project Manager (Engineering) position is hands-on, requiring regular work in the field, working with orphaned oil and gas wells. When not in the field managing the finding and quantification of wells, and managing plugging efforts, this role requires collaborating with our pipeline development team, coordinating efforts for trips to the field, data analysis, and providing necessary information for the carbon credit verification process. Strong candidates will have extensive experience in oil and gas, field experience working on wells, as well as familiarity with carbon project development.
This position is largely remote, and is open to candidates anywhere in the continental U.S. or Canada. While it may vary, travel approximately 30-50% of the time is expected, and applicants must live in close proximity to a major airport. Applications for this position will be accepted through Wednesday, August 12, 2026. Please include as part of your application a cover letter detailing your interest and experience with respect to this role.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
Project Management & Field Operations
- Play a key role in managing our orphaned oil and gas well plugging efforts, from the identification of wells to the measurement and quantification of methane emissions, and through well plugging projects.
- Plan, lead, and execute emissions quantification field work and related field activities, including overseeing in-field operations of external contractors, monitoring the implementation of safety protocols and regulatory compliance practices, managing on-site decision making, and adapting project approaches in response to environmental conditions and technical challenges.
- Apply project management methodologies to progress projects from field work through verification and crediting via documentation collection and management, coordinating cross-functional teams, maintaining priorities, managing of dependencies, and simultaneous advancing multiple projects within the pipeline.
- Operate in hazardous and potentially hazardous environments while maintaining safety standards and achieving project objectives related to emissions measurement and well remediation.
- Provide support for fieldwork, as needed, in other stages of project development.
- Willing to travel to the field and other locations as needed. Schedule may vary; however, anticipated travel is up to 50% of the time during peak season, with long days up to 16 hours.
- Process, analyze, build models with Excel or other tools, and draw conclusions from data from analytical equipment, historical records, and a variety of databases.
- Research the technical, market, environmental, and regulatory context of our projects and innovation concepts to identify constraints and opportunities and communicate them clearly in reports, memos, whitepapers, and presentations.
- Utilize and support development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for measurement equipment, field operations, and data processing.
- Support carbon protocol development, evaluation, and implementation initiatives through researching methodological approaches, analyzing technical requirements, and providing substantive input on crediting frameworks and their effect on project development.
- Contribute to program expansion strategy by evaluating new geographic areas and supporting the development of state-specific workflows.
- Interface with internal and external partners to move projects forward, including but not limited to technicians, technical consultants, contractors, other project managers, landowners, regulators, and government officials.
- Support regulatory compliance across all project-related activities, including, as needed, securing necessary permits, maintaining documentation, and fulfilling reporting requirements for appropriate regulatory agencies.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering required. Chemical, mechanical, or petroleum engineering preferred.
- Professional experience in the oil and gas industry required, preferably with 3-5 years of experience in a field-based operations role such as production engineering, facility engineering, drilling and/or workover, well completion, production testing, wireline, gas processing, or plugging.
- Demonstrated ability and experience to project manage multiple concurrent workstreams and resources.
- Experience managing field-based contractors preferred.
- Hands-on experience with chemical or analytical equipment preferred.
- Willingness to travel to the field and other locations as needed. Schedule may vary. Due to the various locations of our work, the candidate should be located within close proximity to a major airport.
- Experience performing data analysis and building simple models in Excel or other tools.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Valid U.S. driver's license and willingness to travel to various field sites.
- Ability to carry up to 50 pounds of equipment and work in various weather conditions for extended periods of time.
