Job description

Why RTI

RTI International is an independent, scientific research institute dedicated to improving the human condition. Our vision is to address the world's most critical problems with technical and science-based solutions in pursuit of a better future. Clients rely on us to answer questions that demand an objective and multidisciplinary approach-one that integrates expertise across social, statistical, data, and laboratory sciences, engineering, and other technical disciplines to solve the world's most challenging problems. We believe in the promise of science and technical solutions, and we push ourselves every day to deliver on that promise for the good of people, communities, and businesses in the US and around the world. If you are looking for the opportunity to make a real difference, RTI is the place for you.

About the Hiring Group

We are seeking a Senior HR Business Partner.  This role sits within the Talent Partnering team within RTI's CHRO organization.  The team of HR Business Partners is embedded across RTI's business units to connect people strategy to the work that drives RTI's mission forward. We partner with senior leaders across the institute, operating as strategic advisors rather than transactional HR support. This position is RTP, NC headquarters based and may be hybrid/remote within commuting distance. Relocation may be considered.

What You'll Do

As a trusted strategic partner to leaders across RTI's Growth, Marketing, and Client Technology groups, you'll do more than advise on HR matters; you'll shape how these teams are organized, developed, and positioned to succeed. Your clients are senior executives and their leadership teams, and your credibility will come as much from your business acumen as from your HR expertise.

You'll drive alignment between business strategy and workforce priorities across RTI's Growth, Marketing, and Client Technology groups, with the flexibility to expand as RTI's needs evolve. That means influencing at the executive level, bringing independent points of view into leadership conversations, and making proposals that move the needle on organizational performance. You'll lead organizational effectiveness work across your client groups, from diagnosing structural challenges to designing and executing solutions that actually stick.

On the program side, you'll develop, implement, and evaluate initiatives and policies that strengthen how these teams operate and deliver. You'll also identify and act on opportunities where smart HR intervention can directly support business growth, client outcomes, or competitive positioning.

If you're energized by complex, fast-moving environments and want to do HR work that drives real organizational impact, not just within the HR function, but in service of the mission RTI exists to deliver, this role was built for you.

How You'll Make an Impact

At the core of this role is the ability to read an organization clearly. You'll develop a deep understanding of the business strategies, cultural dynamics, and workforce realities shaping your client groups, and use that understanding to surface and address the people challenges that matter most. You'll build people plans that draw on the full range of HR tools and practices, grounded in RTI's values and aligned to what we offer employees and candidates through our Employer Value Proposition.

When change is needed, you'll lead it. That means designing and driving change programs that address both immediate local issues and broader organizational transformations, mobilizing diverse stakeholders around shared goals and keeping multiple workstreams moving in the same direction. You'll also take an active role in shaping functional HR strategy, anticipating business challenges before they become crises, identifying best practices, and contributing to how HR evolves at RTI.

Relationships are your currency here. You'll cultivate trust across all organizational levels, creating the kind of open, feedback-oriented environment where honest conversations can happen and real solutions can take hold. You'll collaborate closely with management to implement corporate HR policies effectively at the business unit level and, where relevant, on a global scale, drawing on RTI's international reach and your own experience navigating cross-border complexity.

On the operational side, you'll consult with employees and managers to resolve complex employee relations matters, working systematically to address root causes rather than symptoms. You'll lead and participate in HR investigations in partnership with the Employee Resource Center and legal counsel, and you'll bring that same rigor to company-wide programs spanning salary review, workforce planning, succession planning, talent management, and organizational change.

You'll also invest in the people around you. That includes mentoring other HRBPs, contributing to a high-performing and continuously learning HR team, and staying current on emerging trends and benchmarks so that what you bring to the table keeps getting sharper.

What You'll Need

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field (E.g., Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.) and 18 years of experience or Master's degree in a relevant field and 14 years of experience. Advance degree or certifications a plus.
  • To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require now, or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa sponsorship.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong HR expertise, including strategic planning and change management skills.
  • Business acumen and knowledge of industry HR trends.
  • Proven relationship building and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to listen and communicate well both verbally and in writing
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
  • Familiarity with HR compliance and employment laws.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and staying updated on HR best practices.
  • Key skills and abilities include coaching, influencing, facilitation, presentation, communication, process development, analysis and problem solving.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Solid understanding of and working experience with HRIS system and Microsoft Office products.
  • Demonstration of the RTI Values and Lead Forward behaviors by all employees is critical to the Institute's success. Behaviors associated with our Values and Lead Forward can been found on RTI Insider and Careers page.
