What does a remote chief technology officer do?

A remote chief technology officer (CTO) is an executive who oversees the technological framework of an organization from outside of the office. Specific job duties vary, depending on the size of the company and number of staff. Some remote chief technology officers focus on in-house infrastructure and internal data, and implement necessary security measures for employees. They analyze technical issues related to the system design and determine how and when changes need to be made. CTOs also establish the technical strategy of how technology is used at the company. Other remote chief technology officers concentrate on the customer-side of a business and its research and development of new products. While the majority of their tasks are completed remotely, they typically need to attend meetings with staff in the office on a regular basis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote chief technology officer?

To thrive as a Remote Chief Technology Officer, you need deep expertise in software development, architecture, and IT management, often supported by a degree in computer science or engineering and significant leadership experience. Familiarity with cloud platforms, DevOps tools, cybersecurity frameworks, and project management systems is typically required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect or PMP. Outstanding communication, strategic thinking, and the ability to build and lead distributed teams are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure effective technology strategy, seamless execution, and strong alignment between business and technical goals in a remote environment.

How does a remote chief technology officer effectively lead and collaborate with distributed engineering teams?

As a Remote CTO, effective leadership hinges on clear communication, strategic use of collaboration tools, and regular check-ins with team leads. You'll need to establish transparent processes for project management, encourage open feedback, and set clear expectations for deliverables across different time zones. Building a strong remote culture and fostering trust are key, as you’re responsible for aligning technology vision with business goals while ensuring your team feels supported and engaged, even from a distance.

Job description

We're looking for a technology leader who knows data platforms deeply, has an opinion about the broader data platform landscape, and can turn that conviction into real engagements, real revenue, and stellar enablement for data architects who know how to deliver.
The CTO, Data Platforms owns Nimble Gravity's technology strategy and execution across our data platform ecosystem, with Databricks and Microsoft Fabric as our co-leads and broader ownership across adjacent platforms. This is a hybrid role: part technology leader, part vendor partner, part trusted advisor to delivery and growth. You'll spend your time setting platform direction, enabling architects and engineers, and showing up in client-facing pre-sales conversations where credibility wins or loses the deal. You report to the CTO of Nimble Gravity and are the single point of accountability for everything data platforms at Nimble Gravity.
The Opportunity
Our clients need help modernizing legacy warehouses, untangling messy integration estates, and trying to make data ready for production AI.
Nimble Gravity is built for this moment. We have deep Databricks delivery experience, an established Microsoft partnership, and Anthropic partner status that puts Claude-powered data products within reach for our clients. The CTO, Data Platforms turns that foundation into a clear, defensible, repeatable practice, setting the direction, raising the delivery floor, sharpening the pre-sales motion, and converting platform credibility into pipeline and signed engagements.
Data Platform Strategy and Technology Direction
You are the voice of Nimble Gravity on data platforms internally and externally. You set the point of view on where Databricks, Fabric, and adjacent platforms fit, where they don't, and how Nimble Gravity will deliver on each. You stay close enough to the technology to be credible with architects and engineers, and far enough above it to set direction for the firm.
Delivery Enablement
You define reference architectures, accelerators, and patterns that our data engineers and architects use on every engagement. You raise the technical bar by mentoring senior delivery talent, running internal enablement, and making sure every Databricks (and broader data platform) engagement leaves us with reusable assets, not just delivered code. You partner with our delivery leadership to keep quality high as we scale.
Pre-Sales and Growth Partnership
You show up where credibility wins deals. You partner with our growth team on qualified opportunities, lead technical discovery, shape proposals, and stand up in front of client architects and CTOs to make the case for Nimble Gravity. You bring conviction to platform selection conversations and help clients see the path from current state to a data foundation that's ready for AI. You influence pipeline as a leading indicator, partner-sourced opportunities, expansion at existing accounts, and new logos where data platform expertise is the wedge.
Vendor Partnerships
You are our primary technical face to Databricks and to the Microsoft data platform organization. You build and maintain the working relationships with Databricks field SAs, partner managers, and product leadership, and with their counterparts in the Microsoft Fabric ecosystem including FastTrack, partner managers, and product teams that turn into joint pursuits and co-sell motion. You coordinate cleanly with our broader Microsoft and Anthropic partner motions, since most modern data platform opportunities involve all three. You keep us sharp on Databricks and Fabric roadmaps, new capabilities, and partner program mechanics.
Responsibilities
  • Own the data platform technology strategy end to end. Define Nimble Gravity's point of view on Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, and adjacent data platforms. Codify which platforms we lead with, where we partner, and where we walk away. Update the strategy as the market moves.
  • Lead on Databricks. Serve as one of the firm's senior technical authorities on Databricks Unity Catalog, Delta Lake, Lakehouse Federation, MLflow, Mosaic AI, Genie, DLT, and the partner program. Maintain a credible operator's view on what's production-ready and what isn't.
  • Lead on Microsoft Fabric. Serve as one of the firm's senior technical authorities on Microsoft Fabric OneLake, Lakehouse, Warehouse, Real-Time Intelligence, Data Factory, and the Fabric partner program. Stay current on Synapse, BigQuery, and the open table format ecosystem (Delta, Iceberg, Hudi), and make sure our architects can navigate multi-platform realities at our clients without ideology getting in the way.
  • Enable our existing delivery team. Define reference architectures, accelerators, code patterns, and quality bars for data platform engagements. Run internal enablement that sharpens the architects and engineers we already have, and makes them more effective on every engagement.
  • Drive pre-sales credibility. Lead technical discovery on qualified data platform opportunities. Shape proposals, scope engagements, and stand up in front of client CTOs, Chief Data Officers, and architecture leads. Be the technical reason a client picks Nimble Gravity.
  • Partner with the growth team. Work hand in glove with our sales leadership and account executives. Translate platform strategy into specific account plays. Identify expansion paths at existing MSA accounts. Influence pipeline and shorten sales cycles by being credible in the room early.
  • Own the Databricks and Microsoft Fabric partner relationships. Serve as the senior Nimble Gravity contact for Databricks and Microsoft Fabric field, partner, and product teams. Drive joint account planning, co-sell motion, deal registration, and partner program advancement with both. Coordinate with our Anthropic and broader Microsoft partner leads on opportunities that touch multiple platforms.
  • Capture and codify learnings. Turn every significant engagement into reusable assets - reference architectures, case studies, accelerators, ROI models, vision artifacts. Feed those back into the next pursuit so every cycle compounds.
  • Position the data platform offer portfolio. Shape and refine Nimble Gravity's data platform offerings modernization, migration, lakehouse build-outs, governance, AI-ready data foundations. Adapt offerings to specific client situations and to where our partner ecosystem creates the most leverage.
  • Cross-functional collaboration. Partner with the CTO, the office of the CTO, delivery, pre-sales, product, RevOps, and growth leadership. Coordinate cleanly with our Microsoft, Databricks, and Anthropic partner motions. Ensure smooth handoffs from sale to delivery and from delivery back into the next pursuit.
  • Market intelligence and positioning. Stay ahead of platform vendor product and program changes Databricks releases, Fabric maturation, open table formats, lakehouse-vs-warehouse positioning. Brief internal teams. Adjust our positioning fast when the market moves.
  • Represent Nimble Gravity in the data platform ecosystem. Show up at Databricks Data + AI Summit, Microsoft Ignite and Build, FabCon, partner briefings, joint customer engagements, and selected industry events. Be a credible, technical, business-literate face of Nimble Gravity that platform vendors want to bring into their accounts.

Qualifications and Experience
  • 10+ years of relevant experience, with a clear arc from hands-on data engineering or data architecture into technology leadership.
  • Deep, current Databricks expertise. You can defend an architecture decision in front of a client architect and a Databricks SA in the same meeting. Databricks certifications and field experience are strong signals.
  • Deep, current Microsoft Fabric expertise. You can hold your own with a client's Microsoft data architecture team and a Microsoft FastTrack lead in the same conversation. Microsoft data certifications and Fabric field experience are strong signals.
  • Working command of the broader data platform landscape Synapse, Azure Data Factory, Spark, Delta, Iceberg, dbt, Airflow, Unity Catalog or equivalent governance.
  • Proven track record leading data platform practices, capabilities, or centers of excellence. You have enabled senior delivery talent to do their best work and codified how a practice operates, not just delivered a project.
  • Demonstrated success partnering with sales and growth teams in a consulting or professional services environment. You can carry a technical conversation in pre-sales and you know how that conversation converts to revenue.
  • Experience working with platform vendor partner programs including deal registration, partner tiers, co-sell mechanics, partner-sourced versus partner-attached deals. Direct Databricks and Microsoft partner experience are strong pluses.
  • Working knowledge of how data platforms feed production AI retrieval, evaluation, governance, agentic systems, and where AI delivers measurable ROI on top of a modern data foundation.
  • Strong opinions, loosely held. You can defend a platform choice with conviction and change your mind when the evidence warrants it.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication. You can write an executive-level vision document and a technical reference architecture in the same week, and both will be sharp.
  • Experience defining best-in-class delivery processes and being hands-on enough to drive them through to adoption.
  • Demonstrated experience leading others in an entrepreneurial environment to achieve high performance. You can lead a team and you can ship through one.
  • Fluent English required; Spanish proficiency a plus.
  • Experience with revenue operations tools and systems; HubSpot preferred.
  • Self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment focused on customer growth.
  • Ability to work in the US and travel as needed; willing to spend meaningful time on site with clients, vendors, and at industry events.

Why This Role Matters
Data platforms are the foundation everything else sits on. Without a credible data platform practice, AI engagements stall, modernization programs drift, and clients lose patience. With one, we compound - every engagement leaves us sharper, every partnership opens new doors, and every client decision strengthens our position.
Nimble Gravity has the raw material. We have Databricks delivery scars, an established Microsoft partnership, Anthropic launch-partner status, and 20+ FSI MSAs where data platform work can be landed and expanded. The CTO, Data Platforms is the person who turns that raw material into a durable, defensible practice. If you want to own one of the most important technical seats in modern data and AI consulting, this is it.
About Nimble Gravity
