Job Summary

The Cancer Registrar 2 is responsible for case-finding and abstracting core data. This includes patient, disease, and management information into an electronic system. Assists in training registry personnel and follows ACoS guidelines for approved programs. Complies with Texas State Department of Health Services and CDC requirements for timely and complete reporting. Conducts statistical research related to data collection.

The pay range for this position is $25.54 (entry-level qualifications) - $38.30 (highly experienced) The specific rate will depend upon the successful candidate's specific qualifications and prior experience.

Essential Functions of the Role
  • Identifies cases for abstraction based on Pathology Reports, HIM Coding reports, Bill Reports, etc.
  • Abstracts data from patient medical records. This includes patient demographics, diagnostic procedures, history, extent of disease, treatment, follow-up, physician, and other related information.
  • Codes data into database in accordance with protocol requirements.
  • Enters Data of potential cases for abstraction into suspense file in Registry system.
  • Utilizes various resources to perform follow-up functions. Maintains the follow-up percentage as required by the American College of Surgeons.
  • Participates in continuing education programs and in-services to improve job knowledge and skills. Educates data collection staff on study requirements and methods.
  • Works closely with Registrars and Registry Manager to ensure operational needs of the facilities are met.
  • Reviews data for accuracy; assembles and disseminates registry data.
  • Coordinates data collection activities; implements data quality control measures
  • Maintains and protects the confidentiality of patient records.
 Key Success Factors
  • General knowledge of general health care modalities, therapies, terminology and equipment.
  • Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories.
  • Ability to abstract and code diagnosis and treatment data using standard registry coding references.
  • Ability to follow research methodology and protocol.
  • Able to communicate thoughts clearly; both verbally and in writing.
  • Social skills to interact with a wide-range of constituencies.
  • Able to research, examine and disseminate information.
  • Knowledge of statistical and graphic concepts used in the presentation of incidence, treatment, and survival information.
  • Able to apply statistical research to discover insights found in technical data.
  • Basic computer skills, including but not limited to: typing, information security, electronic medical documentation, hand held scanning and email.
