Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Cancer Registry Coordinator supports the Tampa Cancer Institute and its affiliates by overseeing Cancer Registry operations and helping maintain continuous accreditation through the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The position evaluates regulatory standards and develops and implements policies, procedures, and assessment processes to ensure compliance with Commission on Cancer and Florida Cancer Data System requirements. The Coordinator oversees the accurate abstraction and reporting of reportable malignancies in accordance with applicable laws and standards. This position requires Florida residency and occasional on-site attendance at Cancer Committee and other designated meetings.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Coordinates Cancer Registry activities supporting the Tampa Cancer Institute and its affiliates in accordance with applicable state, federal, and national regulatory and accrediting requirements.
  • Supports registry functions, including case finding, abstracting, patient follow-up, Cancer Committee activities, special studies, data reporting, and regulatory compliance.
  • Researches regulatory and accreditation requirements and assists with developing, implementing, and updating Cancer Registry policies, procedures, workflows, and assessment processes.
  • Reviews cancer registry abstracts and supporting medical records for coding accuracy, completeness, data quality, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Provides technical guidance, training, and educational updates to registry staff regarding coding guidelines, reporting requirements, accreditation standards, and registry practices.
  • Serves as a technical resource for cancer registry data, quality measures, clinical practice guidelines, and accreditation requirements.
  • Represents the Cancer Institute on designated committees and provides subject-matter input for strategic planning and oncology accreditation activities.
  • Maintains current professional knowledge through applicable continuing education and National Cancer Registrars Association-approved educational activities.

Requirements
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree.
  • At least five years of cancer registry abstracting experience in a Commission on Cancer-accredited (CoC) facility in a certified cancer registry position.
  • At least three years of experience as a team lead or supervisor.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION
  • Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS) Abstractor Code required or obtained within one month of hire.
  • Oncology Data Specialist Certified (ODS-C).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OR ABILITIES
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, cancer characteristics, disease progression, prognosis, and standards of care.
  • Advanced knowledge of Commission on Cancer, FCDS, NAACCR, AJCC, ICD-O, SEER, STORE, and other applicable cancer registry standards, manuals, and reporting requirements.
  • Skill in interpreting operative, pathology, radiology, laboratory, autopsy, and other medical record documentation.
  • Proficiency with cancer registry software, FCDS IDEA, electronic medical record systems, and related applications.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, problem-solving, and process-improvement skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for working professionally with physicians, staff, and external agencies.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, time-management, and independent-work skills, with consistent accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance, education, and collaborative support to registry staff.
  • Commitment to maintaining current knowledge of evolving cancer registry standards and abstracting guidelines.
