What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Audio Electrical Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Audio Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, audio signal processing, and circuit design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like MATLAB, SPICE, PCB design software, and experience with audio testing equipment are commonly required, along with certifications such as a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate virtually are crucial soft skills in this remote setting. These competencies ensure the development of high-quality audio products, effective troubleshooting, and seamless teamwork from a distance.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Audio Electrical Engineers when collaborating with distributed teams?

Remote Audio Electrical Engineers often encounter challenges related to real-time communication and coordination, especially when troubleshooting complex audio hardware or firmware issues. Since hands-on access to prototypes and test equipment may be limited, clear documentation and frequent virtual meetings are essential for effective collaboration. Sharing design files, schematics, and test results digitally can help bridge gaps, but engineers should be proactive in seeking feedback and clarifying requirements to ensure alignment across time zones and disciplines.

What is a Remote Audio Electrical Engineer?

A Remote Audio Electrical Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and troubleshoots audio systems and equipment, such as microphones, speakers, mixers, and amplifiers, while working from a remote location. They use their expertise in electrical engineering and audio technology to create and improve sound equipment for various industries, including broadcasting, entertainment, and telecommunications. Their responsibilities often include circuit design, signal processing, and collaborating with other engineers or clients virtually to meet project requirements.

What is the difference between Remote Audio Electrical Engineer vs Remote Audio Technician?

AspectRemote Audio Electrical EngineerRemote Audio Technician
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related field, certifications like CTS or CEDIATechnical diploma or certification in audio technology or sound engineering
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and testing of audio electronics remotely or in labsInstallation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of audio systems remotely or on-site
Industry UsageAudio equipment manufacturing, product development, R&DLive sound, studio, broadcast, and installation services

The main difference is that Remote Audio Electrical Engineers focus on designing and developing audio electronic components, while Remote Audio Technicians handle installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of audio systems. Both roles require technical knowledge, but engineers are more involved in creation and testing, whereas technicians focus on operational support.

About the Position

The Electrical Engineer is responsible for developing and preparing high-quality electrical engineering permit drawings and construction documents to support field electricians on complex electrical installations, in alignment with all Company policies, procedures, key objectives and regulations. This role bridges engineering and construction by working closely with field electricians, project managers, designers, and VDC/BIM teams to deliver fully constructible designs across a wide range of projects, from small Design/Build efforts to some of the largest hyper-scale construction projects in the country. In addition to permit drawing development, the Electrical Engineer reviews outside engineering documents for accuracy and constructability, identifies value engineering opportunities, as well as perform engineering studies such as arc flash, short circuit, duct bank ampacity, power factor correction, and lighting. This position provides hands-on field exposure, troubleshooting experience, and a career path requiring professional licensure.
Our Ideal Candidate
  • Has a growth mindset and is always looking to continually learn and grow.
  • Has strong knowledge of the National Electric Code and other building codes as they relate to design.
  • Can coach and mentor others with excellent listening and communication skills.

Day in the Life

  • Develops and prepares detailed electrical engineering permit drawings and construction installation documents to support field execution.
  • Develops conceptual designs, sketches, and value engineering ideas to support project managers and estimators during planning and preconstruction.
  • Prepares electrical calculations, specifications, reports, and technical documentation throughout all phases of construction.
  • Under the supervision of a professionally licensed electrical engineer, develops, reviews, and validates engineering studies including arc flash, short circuit, overcurrent protective device coordination (OCPD), duct bank ampacity, load, lighting, and power factor correction.
  • Coordinates with vendors and reviews shop drawings to model accurate, fully constructible electrical systems, including equipment, conduit, and cable tray within Revit.
  • Participates in electrical construction and design-related training.
  • Adheres to company engineering standards and maintains strict QA/QC procedures for all deliverables.
  • Recommends improvements to design standards, workflows, and procedures. Responds to design questions, resolve issues, and issue plan revisions as required.
  • Stays current with new electrical and safety codes, materials, technologies, and industry best practices.
  • Leads small to mid-size projects as assigned and provides technical guidance to other designers and engineers.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of local building energy codes and standards (e.g., IECC, ASHRAE 90.1, California Title 24), including developing, reviewing, and coordinating drawings for energy code compliance, evaluating lighting fixtures and control systems for compliance, utilizing energy compliance software and processes, and advising project managers on compliance strategies and solutions.
  • Builds and maintains effective working relationships with customers, foremen, project teams, specialty contractors, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Supports design team members as needed while upholding the company’s core values.
  • Consistently makes decisions in an attentive and safe manner to ensure the safety and health of self and others.
  • Utilizes LEAN concepts or other continuous improvement methodologies to ensure the most efficient operations, processes, and activities.
  • Promotes and models the Company mission, vision and values through exercising sound and ethical business practices, championing all elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and providing high quality services and programs as they relate to clients, subcontractors, co-workers, suppliers, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET-accredited).
  • EIT/EI certification or PE license; ability to sit for the Electrical PE exam within 1–2 years if not yet licensed.
  • 3–5 years of experience in electrical facilities power design, including lighting and receptacle layouts, circuiting and panelboard schedules, and load calculations and equipment sizing.
