Job description

WHO WE ARE
The Humane League (THL) is a global nonprofit working to end the abuse of animals raised for food. Recognized as a Top Charity by Animal Charity Evaluators for multiple years running, we are regarded as one of the most effective animal protection organizations in the world. We are a high-impact, mission-driven team that uses our time, talent, and resources strategically to dismantle factory farming and create lasting change for farmed animals worldwide. We set bold goals, embrace continuous improvement, and hold ourselves accountable to the animals who depend on us. As a fully remote organization with 100+ staff across the globe, we collaborate across borders and with partner organizations to build a powerful, united movement for animals.
YOUR OPPORTUNITY
The Humane League is seeking an experienced data-driven, creative, and forward-thinking leader to serve as the Associate Vice President of Digital Engagement. This role leads THL's global digital engagement strategy across all THL-owned digital channels including email, SMS, social media, and online advertising, with the goal of transforming online supporter engagement into sustained, measurable impact for animals.
Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Engagement, the Associate Vice President of Digital Engagement oversees a multidisciplinary team responsible for growing and activating THL's global supporter base to transform attention and interest into campaign wins and long-term fundraising growth. In this role, you will go beyond executing digital strategy to help shape how THL builds impact. You will work cross-organizationally with Engagement, Development, and Programs to influence campaign design and fundraising initiatives, ensuring digital engagement is fully leveraged as a driver of innovation and change. This includes ensuring our strategies deliver short-term results and maximizing the organization's ability to strengthen and grow our global supporter base over time to increase our long-term impact for animals.
This is a highly strategic leadership role focused on digital campaign mobilization and supporter engagement systems, not solely content production. You will align teams, channels, and data to create a cohesive strategy that expands THL's reach, deepens engagement, and maximizes supporter lifetime value while maintaining a high-quality, supporter-centered experience. You will lead and manage a high-performing team, fostering bold creativity and new ideas, strong execution and operational excellence, and data-informed decision-making to leverage data and insights to drive growth and create strategic action. Success in this role requires moving beyond maintaining existing systems to identify new opportunities, challenge current approaches, and drive innovation in how THL mobilizes supporters globally to push the digital engagement strategy to the next level.
This is a full-time, remote position based in the United States. The successful candidate must reside in and be authorized to work in the United States. This position may include domestic or international travel equivalent to 1 or more trips per year. To the extent required by law, in order to enable collaboration with other global team members, you may be required to work occasional hours outside of 9am - 5pm, depending on your time zone.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Digital Strategy and Power-Building
  • Set and evolve THL's 3+ year digital engagement strategy, ensuring our approach grows and mobilizes a global supporter base capable of driving meaningful change for animals.
  • Lead the development of a cohesive, cross-channel vision that balances long-term supporter base growth and power-building with immediate campaign and fundraising needs.
  • Continuously identify opportunities to expand reach, deepen engagement, and strengthen the effectiveness of THL's digital ecosystem, integrating organizational priorities with agility to embrace emerging technologies and opportunities.
  • Ensure digital engagement remains at the forefront of THL's ability to build sustained pressure, influence targets, and achieve mission outcomes.
Supporter Lifecycle and Engagement Systems
  • Own and evolve THL's cross-channel online end-to-end supporter lifecycle strategy, from acquisition through retention and reactivation, ensuring an integrated and high-impact experience across channels.
  • Design and guide strategies that transform moments of attention into sustained participation, deepening supporters' connection to the mission over time.
  • Ensure supporter engagement efforts are effective and sustainable, strengthening long-term relationships while mitigating fatigue and attrition.
  • Center supporters as active participants in change by creating compelling, empowering experiences that bridge online and offline activism.
Campaign Strategy and Digital Mobilization
  • Partner cross-organizationally to shape campaign and mobilization strategies that fully leverage digital engagement as a driver of impact, activating key regions and empowering Open Wing Alliance (OWA) member groups to drive collective campaign successes.
  • Collaborate with Development to ensure digital engagement strategies drive sustainable fundraising growth by increasing conversion, strengthening retention, and maximizing supporter lifetime value, while maintaining a high-quality supporter experience and long-term trust.
  • Contribute your expertise to the design of novel campaigns across online and offline spaces that earn attention, mobilize supporters at scale, and apply meaningful pressure on targets across corporate and legislative efforts. Influence our campaign designs to center our supporters and donors in strategic and effective ways to continually build our impact and power.
  • Ensure digital tactics deliver immediate results while contributing to building long-term supporter growth and engagement.
Performance, Insights, and Continuous Optimization
  • Establish team-wide Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) across supporter acquisition and growth, digital campaign engagement, online fundraising, and retention, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Foster a culture of learning and improvement, where data, experimentation, and calculated risk-taking inform both strategy and execution.
  • Guide and support your team in leveraging analytics, segmentation, and A/B testing to refine approaches, uncover opportunities to innovate, and improve performance over time.
  • Ensure insights are translated into strategic decisions that strengthen both immediate outcomes and long-term impact.
Cross-Channel Integration and Innovation
  • Align strategies across email, SMS, social media, and paid media channels to deliver a cohesive and effective supporter experience. Identify and address fragmentation across channels, systems, and workflows.
  • Partner with IT to evolve tools, integrations, and infrastructure that support more effective digital engagement and mobilization, provide more visibility into our supporter activity, and align with our campaign strategies.
  • Anticipate and adapt to shifts in technology, platforms, and audience behavior to ensure THL remains innovative and effective in our approach. Continuously identify strengths and weaknesses in our approach, as well as opportunities to innovate and potential threats to digital engagement progress.
Team Leadership, Development, and Change Management
  • Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team, setting clear direction while supporting performance and goals, career growth, and supporter engagement strategy.
  • Cultivate a high-agency, collaborative culture that values psychological safety, thoughtful risk-taking, and continuous improvement. Empower team members to innovate and experiment with new ideas and ways of working in pursuit of greater impact.
  • Guide teams through strategic digital and technological changes, including adoption of new tools, processes, and approaches such as AI and automation to improve quality, creativity, and efficiency.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen team structure, collaboration, and ways of working to better support evolving organizational needs. Nurture a supporter-centered team mindset that is accountable to impact at scale, while always seeing, valuing, and respecting supporters as individuals.
  • Strategically forecast resource needs for short and long-term goals. Oversee team budgets and the selection of external partners (media buyers, tech vendors) to ensure cost-efficiency and accountability.
Organizational Leadership and Strategic Influence
  • Serve as a key strategic partner across Campaigns, Development, and Public Policy, ensuring digital engagement is fully integrated into organizational strategy. Contribute to shaping how THL approaches campaigns, online fundraising, and supporter engagement at a systems level.
  • Support digital reputation management and high-stakes communications, ensuring THL's voice remains responsive, credible, and aligned during critical moments. Help position digital engagement as a core driver of THL's ability to achieve both immediate and long-term mission impact.

In addition to the above essential job duties, other duties may be assigned as business needs arise. These may include non-essential, marginal job duties.
