How much do remote 3d scanner jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 1, 2026, the average hourly pay for remote 3d scanner in the United States is $16.16, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.18 and $17.31 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote 3D Scanner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote 3D Scanner, you need proficiency in 3D scanning technology, spatial analysis, and digital modeling, often backed by experience in engineering, architecture, or related fields. Familiarity with tools such as 3D scanners (e.g., FARO, Artec), CAD software, and data processing platforms is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for ensuring accurate data capture and collaboration with remote teams. These competencies are crucial for producing high-quality digital representations and meeting client requirements efficiently.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote 3D Scanners and how can they be overcome?

Remote 3D Scanners often encounter challenges such as ensuring accurate data capture in varying environments, managing large data files, and troubleshooting connectivity issues with remote scanning equipment. To overcome these, it's important to maintain clear communication with on-site personnel, utilize reliable remote access software, and stay updated on the latest 3D scanning technologies. Proactively planning for potential obstacles and having a structured workflow can help minimize downtime and errors, enabling more efficient project completion.

What are remote 3D scanners?

Remote 3D scanners are devices or systems that capture the shape and dimensions of objects or environments from a distance, often using technologies like lasers, structured light, or photogrammetry. These scanners can be operated remotely, allowing technicians to collect precise 3D data without being physically present at the scanning site. Remote 3D scanning is widely used in industries such as construction, manufacturing, archaeology, and forensics for tasks like creating digital twins, inspecting hard-to-reach areas, and documenting sites. Operators may control these scanners via software from another location, making the process efficient and safe in hazardous or inaccessible environments.

What is the difference between Remote 3D Scanner vs 3D Modeling Technician?

AspectRemote 3D Scanner3D Modeling Technician
CredentialsTypically requires certification in 3D scanning software and hardwareRequires skills in 3D modeling software, sometimes certifications in CAD or related tools
Work EnvironmentPrimarily field-based, using portable scanners remotelyMostly office-based, working on computers to create 3D models
Industry UsageUsed in construction, manufacturing, and surveying for precise measurementsUsed in animation, product design, and engineering for creating detailed models

The Remote 3D Scanner focuses on capturing real-world objects remotely using specialized hardware, while the 3D Modeling Technician specializes in creating digital models from various sources. Both roles require technical skills but differ in tools, environment, and application.

Job description

Freelance Job Posting: Reality Capture

Specialist (LiDAR & Drone)

Company: M Hudson Design, Inc.

Location: South Florida (On-site required for capture)

Position Type: Freelance / Independent Contractor (Project-Based)

About M Hudson Design

M Hudson Design (MHD) is a premier, ultra-luxury landscape architecture firm based in West

Palm Beach, Florida. We are pioneering the world’s first fully integrated experiential

design process. We don't just show our clients 2D plans; we build immersive, cinematic 3D

digital twins of their future estates, allowing them to experience their homes before ground

is ever broken.

We are seeking a highly skilled Reality Capture Specialist to serve as the critical first step

in our design pipeline. You will be responsible for capturing the existing real-world

conditions of ultra-luxury estates and translating them into pristine digital data.

The Role

As our Reality Capture Specialist, you will conduct field visits to high-end residential

properties across South Florida. Your primary objective is to capture the site using

advanced LiDAR scanning and drone photogrammetry, and then process that data into

clean, highly accurate 3D point clouds and meshes.

Your deliverables are the foundation upon which our entire 3D architectural and landscape

design process is built. Precision, professionalism, and speed are paramount.

Key Responsibilities

• Field Capture: Independently travel to ultra-luxury project sites in South Florida to

conduct comprehensive site surveys.

• LiDAR Scanning: Operate terrestrial LiDAR equipment (e.g., Leica BLK360 or similar) to

capture millimeter-accurate scans of existing architecture, hardscapes, and critical

topography.

• Drone Photogrammetry: Pilot enterprise-level drones (e.g., DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise,

Matrice series) to capture high-resolution aerial imagery and video for photogrammetry

and Gaussian Splatting workflows.

• Data Processing: Stitch, register, and clean raw LiDAR and drone data using industrystandard

software (e.g., RealityCapture, Leica Cyclone, or RealityScan).

• Deliverable Handoff: Export and deliver clean point clouds (.las, .e57) and 3D meshes

(.obj, .fbx) to our remote 3D modeling team via our cloud server (BIM 360 / Google Drive)

within strict 48-72 hour turnaround windows.

• Professional Representation: Act as a representative of MHD on-site, maintaining the

highest level of professionalism and discretion around ultra-high-net-worth clients and

their properties.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Hardware Ownership: Must own or have reliable access to professional-grade

terrestrial LiDAR equipment and a commercial mapping drone.

• Licensing: Active FAA Part 107 Commercial Drone Pilot License is strictly required.

• Software Proficiency: Expert-level experience in photogrammetry and point cloud

processing software (RealityCapture preferred).

• Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of coordinate systems, survey control,

point cloud registration, and mesh decimation.

• Portfolio: Must provide a portfolio or examples demonstrating previous reality capture

work, specifically involving complex outdoor environments, vegetation, and residential

architecture.

• Location: Must be locally based in South Florida with reliable transportation to travel to

sites ranging from Miami to Jupiter.

Bonus Qualifications (Nice to Have)

• Experience processing data specifically for Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) workflows (e.g.,

Luma AI, Polycam).

• Familiarity with capturing 360-degree ground photography (e.g., Insta360).

• Previous experience working on luxury residential construction or architectural projects.
