Remote 3D Scanner information

What are remote 3D scanners?

Remote 3D scanners are devices or systems that capture the shape and dimensions of objects or environments from a distance, often using technologies like lasers, structured light, or photogrammetry. These scanners can be operated remotely, allowing technicians to collect precise 3D data without being physically present at the scanning site. Remote 3D scanning is widely used in industries such as construction, manufacturing, archaeology, and forensics for tasks like creating digital twins, inspecting hard-to-reach areas, and documenting sites. Operators may control these scanners via software from another location, making the process efficient and safe in hazardous or inaccessible environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote 3D Scanners and how can they be overcome?

Remote 3D Scanners often encounter challenges such as ensuring accurate data capture in varying environments, managing large data files, and troubleshooting connectivity issues with remote scanning equipment. To overcome these, it's important to maintain clear communication with on-site personnel, utilize reliable remote access software, and stay updated on the latest 3D scanning technologies. Proactively planning for potential obstacles and having a structured workflow can help minimize downtime and errors, enabling more efficient project completion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote 3D Scanner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote 3D Scanner, you need proficiency in 3D scanning technology, spatial analysis, and digital modeling, often backed by experience in engineering, architecture, or related fields. Familiarity with tools such as 3D scanners (e.g., FARO, Artec), CAD software, and data processing platforms is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for ensuring accurate data capture and collaboration with remote teams. These competencies are crucial for producing high-quality digital representations and meeting client requirements efficiently.

What is the difference between Remote 3D Scanner vs 3D Modeling Technician?

AspectRemote 3D Scanner3D Modeling Technician
CredentialsTypically requires certification in 3D scanning software and hardwareRequires skills in 3D modeling software, sometimes certifications in CAD or related tools
Work EnvironmentPrimarily field-based, using portable scanners remotelyMostly office-based, working on computers to create 3D models
Industry UsageUsed in construction, manufacturing, and surveying for precise measurementsUsed in animation, product design, and engineering for creating detailed models

The Remote 3D Scanner focuses on capturing real-world objects remotely using specialized hardware, while the 3D Modeling Technician specializes in creating digital models from various sources. Both roles require technical skills but differ in tools, environment, and application.

Job description

About the Role
Insight Surgery help surgeons plan the most complex surgeries, designing and manufacturing cutting edge patient-specific medical devices including anatomical models, surgical cutting guides and complex custom implants partnering with a number of large institutions across the USA and with the NHS in the UK. This is achieved by delivering a unique Point of Care service model.
We are looking for a passionate Biomedical Engineer to join our growing team and help design patient-specific medical devices and surgical solutions. In this role, you will transform medical imaging data into custom surgical cutting and drilling guides, using planning tools that directly support surgeons and improve patient outcomes.
You will work closely with surgeons, engineers and manufacturing teams to take patient-specific solutions from concept to delivery. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex anatomical challenges, working with cutting-edge 3D technologies and making a real impact in the operating room.
The successful candidate can expect a challenging and rewarding role, making a positive difference to patient outcomes in some of the USA's leading hospitals. Our innovative way of working directly at the point of care allows for a level of autonomy and responsibility, providing staff with a structured career development pathway.
This role ideally will have a successful candidate based at our Houston, Texas office, however remote working is another option. It will nationally, indirectly report to Insight Surgery's USA Team lead based in Houston and globally to the Head of Engineering based in the UK.

  • Learn and understand the techniques in the Insight Surgery product portfolio, using a combination of internal training documentation, peer lead development and external scientific papers.
  • Project manage and own the end-to-end design workflow, ensuring compliance with the ISO 13485 certified Quality Management System.
  • Use validated segmentation software to convert patient scan data into 3D anatomical models in preparation for clinical cases.
  • Collaborate with surgeons and clinicians throughout the planning and design phases to design and implement custom-made medical devices.
  • Use CAD to design solutions for a broad range of clinical indications.
  • Carry out routine maintenance and calibration of facility equipment in line with the scheduled plan.
  • Prepare the design files for 3D printing and production workflows, print devices to a high standard, then complete post-processing, finishing and inspection.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Biomedical Engineering or a similar related discipline.
  • Experience using enterprise-level medical segmentation software.
  • Experience using CAD software to design medical devices.
  • Good knowledge of human anatomy and/or surgical procedures related to orthopaedic disciplines.

Preferred Specific Knowledge & Skills
  • Materialise Mimics experience, including segmentation of CT
  • Prior industrial experience designing patient-specific surgical guides using CAD, preferably Geomagic Freeform.
  • An understanding of 3D printing technologies (FDM, SLA and SLS) and associated post-processing/inspection.
  • Good knowledge of patient-specific guides.
  • Knowledge of working with a Quality Management System such as ISO 13485.
  • An understanding of working with 3D printer technology, including FDM, SLA, SLS and Polyjet.
  • Excellent project management and communication skills.

Salary & Benefits
  • Core working hours 0900-1800, Monday to Friday.
  • 18 days annual holiday allowance plus 9 vacation days.
