What is the difference between Relationship Coaching vs Marriage Counseling?

Work EnvironmentPrivate coaching sessions, workshops, online platformsTherapy clinics, private practices, hospitals
Employer & IndustryCoaching firms, independent practice, wellness industryHealthcare, mental health services, counseling centers
FocusPersonal growth, goal setting, improving relationship skillsAddressing mental health issues, resolving conflicts, emotional healing

Relationship coaching primarily focuses on personal development and enhancing relationship skills through goal-oriented coaching. In contrast, marriage counseling involves licensed therapists addressing emotional and psychological issues within a marriage. Both roles aim to improve relationships but differ in credentials, approach, and scope.

What are some common challenges faced by relationship coaches when working with clients, and how can they be addressed?

Relationship coaches often encounter challenges such as clients' resistance to change, difficulty in effective communication between partners, and managing emotional intensity during sessions. To address these, coaches use active listening, create a safe and non-judgmental environment, and employ evidence-based techniques to facilitate healthy dialogue. Ongoing professional development and supervision can also help coaches navigate complex situations and support their clients' progress.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Relationship Coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Relationship Coach, you need a background in psychology, counseling, or coaching, often supported by relevant certifications such as those from the International Coach Federation (ICF). Familiarity with coaching frameworks, assessment tools, and video conferencing platforms is typically required. Strong soft skills like active listening, empathy, and effective communication help build trust and rapport with clients. These skills and qualifications are crucial for guiding individuals or couples toward healthier, more fulfilling relationships and ensuring professional credibility.

What is relationship coaching?

Relationship coaching is a professional service that helps individuals or couples improve their relationships, communication, and emotional connection. Unlike therapy, which may address mental health or past trauma, relationship coaching focuses on setting goals, resolving current challenges, and building practical skills for healthier relationships. Coaches typically use structured conversations, exercises, and feedback to support clients in achieving the relationships they desire. Sessions can address romantic partnerships, family dynamics, or even workplace relationships. The goal is to empower clients to create positive changes and develop stronger, more fulfilling connections.

Job description

About Paired
At Paired, we're on a mission to help couples stay in love. So we created a fun, safe space for couples to explore their relationship and grow together - both digitally and in real life.
Backed by expert advice and research, our app delivers engaging questions, games, and quizzes that improve key relationship skills in 5 minutes a day. Alongside this, we offer a growing range of physical products for couples, extending our brand beyond the screen and into everyday moments of connection.
Our app is the #1 couples app globally with more than 12M downloads, 250,000 daily active users, and £5M of fundraising to date. We've won multiple awards from Apple and Google, recognizing us for our innovative approach to romantic relationship health.
About The Role
Paired is expanding into relationship coaching and we are seeking an exceptional leader to build and scale this new expert-led service.
You'll own Paired's relationship coaching methodology, expert standards, training, quality, safety, and coaching experience. You'll co-own how the coaching offer works, the customer journey, beta design, and customer outcomes, working closely with Product, Growth, CRM, Operations, and Content to bring the experience to life inside Paired.
This is a unique opportunity to shape an entirely new category at the intersection of coaching, relationships, and technology - backed by the audience, brand, and resources of the #1 app for couples.
What Your Role Encompasses
Relationship coaching strategy
  • Develop and launch Paired's relationship coaching offering
  • Own the coaching methodology, training, quality, safety and coaching experience
  • Co-own the customer journey, beta design, launch plan, and end-to-end coaching experience with Operations, Product, Growth, CRM, and Content
  • Define quality, safety, satisfaction, pathway completion, and customer outcome metrics, and partner with other teams on acquisition, engagement, retention, and commercial metrics
  • Conduct ongoing market and competitor research to identify opportunities for differentiation and growth
  • Partner with leadership to shape the long-term vision for relationship support within Paired
Relationship coaching course content
  • Define Paired's coaching philosophy, frameworks, and approach
  • Design structured relationship coaching pathways for couples and individuals
  • Build training materials, playbooks, and educational content for coaches and customers
  • Define operational safeguards, escalation procedures, and quality standards
Expert hiring & management
  • Recruit and manage a high-quality network of relationship coaches, therapists, counselors, psychologists, and other relationship experts operating in a non-clinical coaching capacity
  • Define the profile, qualification standards, vetting process, and onboarding experience of coaches
  • Build systems for coach training, quality assurance, performance management, and ongoing development
  • Create a strong relationship services culture focused on customer outcomes, empathy, and operational excellence
  • Continuously improve customer satisfaction and relationship coaching effectiveness through feedback and data analysis
Product integration & operations
  • Work closely with Product, Engineering, CRM, and Operations teams to ensure a seamless relationship coaching experience that integrates naturally into the Paired ecosystem
  • Help define intake flows, matching systems, session logistics, and customer support processes
  • Partner with Operations and Product on the implementation and optimization of operational tools including scheduling and video platforms
  • Partner with Operations to develop scalable processes for scheduling, matching, coach utilisation, session notes, customer feedback, and quality review
  • Collaborate with Product and Content teams to integrate relationship coaching and counseling services, insights, and homework loops into the Paired app experience
  • Maintain high standards of customer care, professionalism, and ethical practice

Requirements
  • US based (East Coast only)
  • 5+ years of experience in coaching, therapy, counseling, or relationship support industries, including some direct client work
  • Experience hiring, training, managing, or quality-assuring coaches, therapists, counselors, psychologists, or other practitioners
  • Strong understanding of relationship support methodologies, frameworks, and customer needs
  • Experience creating educational content, training programs, or coaching curricula
  • Operational mindset with the ability to design scalable systems and processes
  • Excellent people management and leadership skills with the ability to inspire and develop coaches
  • Data-driven mindset with experience using customer insights and metrics to improve outcomes
  • Entrepreneurial attitude with comfort operating in ambiguity and building expert-led services from zero to one
  • A true passion for relationships, coaching/therapy, and helping couples improve their connection
Stand out with:
  • Deep app experience within relationship coaching, couples therapy, or adjacent wellness categories
  • Accreditation or formal training in coaching, counseling, psychology, or therapy
  • Experience building coaching or therapy businesses from an early stage
  • Familiarity with digital health, wellness, or marketplace-style operational models
  • Experience working in a fast-growing startup environment
  • Experience integrating coaching or educational experiences into consumer apps or subscription businesses

Benefits

  • In-person events across Europe, bringing colleagues together through coworking experiences and team retreats.
  • Subsidized coworking space
  • 25 days paid time off (PTO) plus public holidays
  • Yearly learning budget of £1,000 / €1,150
  • Three months' paid maternity leave and one month's paid paternity leave, inclusive of same-sex and adoptive parents
  • Comprehensive health insurance
  • Opportunity to help millions of people with their relationship

  1. Application review (qualifications, experience, and motivation)
  2. COO interview - Meet to discuss the role and your suitability in further detail
  3. Task - We'll send you a task to complete at home to assess your practical skills

  • We strive to create an inclusive environment where unique perspectives are encouraged, as we firmly believe that diversity enhances our company, culture, and product
  • We regularly review our hiring processes, materials and pipeline to ensure they are accessible and free of bias, offering equal opportunity to underrepresented groups. We are also always learning. We maintain open minds and welcome feedback on how we can improve
