Job description

Chief Engineer - Data Center Operations, Mesa, Arizona

The Chief Engineer will be responsible for overall site management and maintenance, client reporting, staff availability, emergency response coordination, incident and problem Management, and participation in miscellaneous projects.  They will work closely with the Regional Director of Operations to maintain and support the dedicated power and cooling service level commitments for each of the designated data center facilities. This is an onsite position in Mesa, Arizona with the expectation to be local and onsite daily.  There is a limited amount of travel (~10%) associated with this role, but could require regional coverage and training support at times.

Summary of Duties

Monitor, maintain and operate all on-site mission critical equipment within SOP and EOP functionality including:

  • Primary Switch Gear
  • Medium Voltage Gear
  • Distributed Switch Gear
  • Automatic and Static Transfer Switches
  • Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS)
  • Diesel Generators
  • Power Distribution Units (PDU's)
  • Remote Power Panels (RPP's)
  • Main and sub breakers
  • HVAC, CRAC and mini-mate cooling units
  • Fire and Life Safety systems

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Creating, managing, and executing standard Method of Procedures (MOP)
  • Support the Regional Director in implementing and managing the Preventative Maintenance program for the designated site
  • Work with our computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and other monitoring systems to ensure they are current and contain accurate information for all critical components
  • Identify areas of improvement within the existing environment, particularly in the areas of efficiency and utilization (PUE)
  • Effectively manage, supervise, and evaluate contract technical labor team
  • Ensure compliance with all safety procedures as well as utilization of protective equipment
  • Maintain ongoing communications with tenant/s and vendors
  • Assist in updating and/or maintaining as-built drawings
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, requisitions, government agencies and EdgeConneX directives as it relates to building operations
  • Participate in on-call rotation when needed to cover evening and weekend incidents
  • Provide 1-hour response time for high priority incidents
  • Respond quickly and accordingly to all customer concerns

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to operate, manage, and maintain critical electrical, mechanical, and fire and life safety systems
  • Comprehend, analyze and interrupt complex project documents, including AutoCAD, Visio and PDF documents
  • Adept in Vendor Management, both in relationship building and providing guidance for end goals
  • Knowledge and capability of processing work orders, tickets, schedules and inventory within a formalized ticket management system
  • Skilled in use of automated building management systems
  • Strong written and verbal communication

Education/Experience

10+ years of operations in a mission critical environment with superior communication and client management skills

3+ years of direct experience working at an enterprise or hyperscale data center in a hands-on MEP operations leadership role

Prior experience and expertise with the following:

  • Emerson-Liebert power and mechanical equipment
  • Square D switchgear
  • MTU, Caterpillar, or Cummins generators
  • Fire and Life safety system

Direct experience with a robust Incident, Problem, and Change Management ticketing system is a must

Travel

This position will be located at the Mesa, Arizona EdgeConneX Data Center facility however, regular travel (quarterly) will be required to manage additional Data Centers within the Region as well as for annual and quarterly company meetings.
