Job description

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the direction of the Assistant Recreation Director, the Programs Supervisor is responsible for overseeing multiple recreation program areas and coordinating the daily operations of program staff within the Recreation Department. This position supervises coordinators responsible for preschool, enrichment, fitness, child care, and membership services while also directly overseeing the hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, and supervision of front desk staff.

The Programs Supervisor works to ensure high-quality customer service, efficient operations, strong staff development, and successful recreation programming that aligns with the department's mission of providing outstanding community recreation opportunities.

FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Oversee and supervise the Front Desk Coordinator, Funshine Coordinator, Enrichment Coordinator, Fitness Coordinator, and Child Care Coordinator.
  • Directly oversee the hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, and supervision of front desk staff.
  • Assist coordinators in planning, implementing, and evaluating recreation programs and services.
  • Support staff development through coaching, mentoring, performance evaluations, and ongoing training opportunities.
  • Ensure excellent customer service standards are maintained throughout the Recreation Department.
  • Assist with department staffing needs, including recruitment, interviewing, hiring, scheduling, and employee discipline when necessary.
  • Coordinate onboarding and orientation processes for new staff members.
  • Assist in developing operational procedures and maintaining consistent department standards.
  • Monitor program operations to ensure safety, efficiency, and positive participant experiences.
  • Work collaboratively with coordinators to address program needs, customer concerns, and operational challenges.
  • Assist in budget monitoring, supply purchasing, and inventory management for assigned program areas.
  • Support marketing and promotional efforts for recreation programs and services.
  • Maintain records, reports, documents, and databases relevant to department activities.
  • Prepare and distribute communications as required.
  • Assist with department-wide events, initiatives, and special projects.
  • Attend meetings, trainings, and community events as assigned.
  • Assisting with all other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Recreation Administration or a related field required OR
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.

Experience:

  • Three (3) years' experience in the field of recreation management; at least one (1) year of supervisory experience required.
  • CPR and first aid certification.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of general supervisory and managerial principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of recreation practices.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to effectively supervise, mentor, and lead staff teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to make sound decisions in sometimes stressful situations.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Flexible schedule including occasional evenings, weekends, and special events as required.
