What are some typical challenges a RAMS Engineer faces when collaborating with multidisciplinary teams?

As a RAMS Engineer, one of the main challenges is ensuring that reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety requirements are fully integrated into the design, especially when working with teams focused on performance or cost objectives. Effective communication and negotiation skills are essential, as you often need to advocate for safety and reliability without compromising project timelines. Coordinating with design, testing, and operations teams requires a proactive approach to identify potential risks early and to align everyone on compliance with industry standards.

What is a RAMS Engineer?

A RAMS Engineer is a professional responsible for ensuring the Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS) of products, systems, or processes, particularly in sectors like railways, aerospace, and industrial engineering. They analyze system designs to identify potential risks and propose improvements to enhance overall system performance and safety. RAMS Engineers work closely with design, maintenance, and safety teams to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations. Their goal is to minimize downtime, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure the safe operation of complex systems.

Common Search & ComparisonRams Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer

Rams Engineers and Mechanical Engineers share similar educational backgrounds and certifications, often working in related industries. However, Rams Engineers typically focus on structural aspects of construction and infrastructure projects, while Mechanical Engineers are more involved in designing and developing mechanical systems. Both roles require strong technical skills and can overlap in certain industrial settings, but their primary responsibilities and work environments differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a RAMS Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety) Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, systems analysis, and risk assessment, typically supported by a degree in engineering and experience in safety-critical industries. Familiarity with tools such as FMEA, fault tree analysis software, and relevant industry standards or certifications (e.g., IEC 61508, EN 50126) is vital. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across teams and convey complex technical information. These competencies ensure that systems are designed, evaluated, and maintained to meet stringent safety and reliability requirements, reducing risks and operational downtime.

From high-speed trains, metros, monorails, and trams, to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility, we offer our diverse customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, 80,000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.

Could you be the full-time onsite Product Introduction Field Engineer in Atlanta, GA, US we're looking for?

Your future role

Take on a new challenge and apply your technical and engineering expertise in a new cutting-edge field. You'll work alongside collaborative and dynamic teammates.

You'll play a pivotal role in supporting technical field activities on the Atlanta 300R project during the Product Introduction (PI) period, contributing to commissioning, warranty support, and leading troubleshooting and problem-solving processes. Day-to-day, you'll work closely with teams across the business (engineering, manufacturing, quality, and industrial functions), lead field modification implementations, manage car configurations, and much more.

You'll specifically take care of diagnosing and resolving technical issues, but also driving reliability growth through failure investigation and implementing reliability forecasts.

We'll look to you for:

  • Supporting technical field activities on the Atlanta 300R project during the PI period, including commissioning and warranty.

  • Diagnosing the cause of malfunction or failure of operational equipment and recommending preventative and corrective actions.

  • Defining troubleshooting methodologies and providing technical guidance to support technicians in repairs.

  • Providing feedback on technical documentation deficiencies and creating alternative support documentation for PI technicians.

  • Supporting technical reviews with internal and external suppliers, partners, customers, and authorities.

  • Preparing and implementing Field Modifications (FM) and maintaining relevant documentation.

  • Driving Kx (8D) issues with Quality and internal & external suppliers in support of the Project Product Introduction Manager (PrPIM).

  • Ensuring completeness and quality of input to the Failure Management database for RAMS exploitation.

  • Driving reliability growth through failure/event investigation and implementing reliability forecasts with RAMS support.

  • Ensuring and facilitating information flow within the PI customer site, PI functions, and project teams while providing status updates and transparency on PI activities and key technical issues to the PrPIM.

All about you

  • Degree in Engineering or Industrial Engineering (Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred).

  • Experience or understanding of technical field activities, including commissioning, warranty, and troubleshooting processes.

  • Knowledge of railway safety standards, RAM (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability), and EHS (Environment, Health, and Safety) requirements.

  • Internal EHS training certification and strong communication skills for cross-functional collaboration.

  • Familiarity with product knowledge related to APM and 300R systems.

  • Proficiency in data analytics and the ability to use data for failure management and reliability growth.

  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills in complex environments.

  • Technical expertise in electrical, electronic, mechanical, and network domains.

  • Ability to lead a team effectively in a challenging and multicultural environment.

  • Benefit from a fair and dynamic reward package that recognises your performance and potential, plus comprehensive and competitive social coverage (life, medical, pension).
