What is a RAMS engineer?

A RAMS Engineer is a professional responsible for ensuring the Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS) of products, systems, or processes, particularly in sectors like railways, aerospace, and industrial engineering. They analyze system designs to identify potential risks and propose improvements to enhance overall system performance and safety. RAMS Engineers work closely with design, maintenance, and safety teams to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations. Their goal is to minimize downtime, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure the safe operation of complex systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a RAMS engineer?

To thrive as a RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety) Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, systems analysis, and risk assessment, typically supported by a degree in engineering and experience in safety-critical industries. Familiarity with tools such as FMEA, fault tree analysis software, and relevant industry standards or certifications (e.g., IEC 61508, EN 50126) is vital. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across teams and convey complex technical information. These competencies ensure that systems are designed, evaluated, and maintained to meet stringent safety and reliability requirements, reducing risks and operational downtime.

What are some typical challenges a RAMS engineer faces when collaborating with multidisciplinary teams?

As a RAMS Engineer, one of the main challenges is ensuring that reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety requirements are fully integrated into the design, especially when working with teams focused on performance or cost objectives. Effective communication and negotiation skills are essential, as you often need to advocate for safety and reliability without compromising project timelines. Coordinating with design, testing, and operations teams requires a proactive approach to identify potential risks early and to align everyone on compliance with industry standards.

Job description

Job title: Health & Safety Manager

Location: Austin, Texas, US (Site travel across the US required)

About XYZ Reality

XYZ Reality are the creators of the world's first and only engineering-grade Augmented Reality solution, purpose built for the construction industry. Not only have we created this holographic technology, that sits within The Atom — a smart, site-safe headset/hardhat — but we implement it on projects, utilising the power of AR to ensure that all schemes are completed in line with delivery timescales and budgets.

XYZ has grown to over 100 staff across the UK, US & Europe and is working with Mission Critical organisations & construction companies to successfully deliver major projects.

The Role

We're now looking for a Health & Safety Manager to support HSE compliance across our operations.

Based in Austin, Texas, you'll be the key point of contact for our external HSE consultancies — coordinating compliance activity, supporting RAMS and incident management, and helping embed a strong safety culture across a fast-moving, tech-led construction environment.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced H&S professional to gain genuine international exposure across a business operating at the cutting edge of construction technology.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as the primary liaison for external HSE consultancies globally — coordinating audits, training, and compliance activities delivered by third parties, and ensuring consistent standards are maintained across all regions.
  • Write and review risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) — maintaining risk registers, tracking corrective actions, and ensuring all documentation is current, accurate, and compliant with applicable regulations.
  • Support incident reporting and investigations — coordinating responses, identifying root causes, tracking remedial actions through to close-out, and ensuring learnings are shared across the business.
  • Monitor regulatory compliance across XYZ's operating regions — with a strong grounding in OSHA requirements for US operations and an understanding of equivalent frameworks in UK and European jurisdictions.
  • Produce, coordinate, and track toolbox talks across project and office teams — promoting a positive safety culture and ensuring HSE communication reaches every level of the organisation.
  • Coordinate audits and monitor follow-up actions — supporting the Global Head of Project Delivery with reporting, compliance tracking, and continuous improvement of XYZ's global HSE programme.
Required Qualifications
  • 5–10 years of Health & Safety experience within the construction or engineering industry, with a strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations and their practical application on active project sites.
  • Proven experience supporting RAMS preparation and review, and involvement in incident investigations — from initial reporting through root cause analysis and corrective action tracking.
  • Relevant H&S qualification (NEBOSH, OSHA 30, or equivalent) and the ability to work effectively with external consultancies, site teams, and senior stakeholders across multiple regions.
  • Highly organised with strong written and verbal communication skills — able to manage multiple workstreams, maintain accurate compliance records, and travel to project sites on a regular basis.
Key Experience & Skills
  • OSHA regulations & multi-region HSE compliance
  • RAMS authoring, review & risk register management
  • Incident reporting, investigation & close-out tracking
  • External consultancy coordination & audit management
  • Toolbox talks, safety culture & team communication
  • Organised, detail-oriented & effective across global teams
Benefits
  • Private medical (incl. dental & vision)
  • Extra Christmas shutdown days
  • 15 days PTO + public holidays
  • Hybrid working
  • Biannual salary reviews
  • Summer & Christmas staff parties
  • Employee referral scheme
